- This invention relates to broom improvements and embodies connectively associated yet separably held broom and encasement portions adapted for unitary use as a whole device, that is, an improved structure and arrangement of this type in which the encasement portion though operable for the detachment of the broom portion, is yet interdependent, with said broom portion, for fixed engagement with and on a frame structure within and forming a part of the broom portion, and is capable of fixedly though removably mounting a handle thereon.

Patented Aug. 25, 1953 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE This invention relates to broom improvements and embodies connectively associated yet separably held broom and encasement portions adapted for unitary use as a whole device, that is, an improved structure and arrangement of this type in which the encasement portion though operable for the detachment of the broom portion, is yet interdependent, with said broom portion, for fixed engagement with and on a frame structure within and forming a part of the broom portion, and is capable of fixedly though removably mounting a handle thereon.
An object of the invention is to produce an improved broom of the type herein set forth in which the internal frame structure, co-operatively with the openable encasement portion, produces a broom unit possessing rigid reinforcement for adequate strength in practical adaptation and enables ready and easy removal of the broom portion for replacement on occasion.
Another object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient clasp elements to detachably yet securely engage and retain in locked assembled position the opposing Wall faces of the encasement portion, the entire structure itself being light weight yet strong and durable, of neat attractive appearance and conveniently handled 1D. use.
Other objects and advantages to be obtained will hereinafter more fully appear in the following description and accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an assembly view mostly in elevation, but with a part of it broken away on or about the line AA of Figure 2 disclosing a section to distinguish clearly between the frame structure and the broken lines which indicate the machine stitching extending across the broom portion, the handle member being broken away to conserve space in the drawing.
Figure 2 is a side edge elevation indicating the position of the internal frame structure within the broom portion.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the internal frame structure.
Figure 4 is an enlarged bottom plan view looking up into the encasement portion.
Figure 5 is a perspective View showing the typical overlapping engagement of the edges of the opposing wall portions on the ends of the encasement with the slot arrangement at the bottom thereof adapted for engagement with the oppositely disposed terminals of the internal frame structure as indicated.
Figure 6 is an enlarged perspective view showing the general form of the encasement portion before the normally opposed wall parts thereof are folded together on the broken lines X, and,
Figure '7 is an enlarged perspective view showing one of the pair of clasp members adapted for removably mounting the device on the broom handle, showing particularly the reinforcing rib or raised bead longitudinally thereon.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 8 designates generally the broom portion having the spaced apart rows of machine stitching I i and the built-in frame structure I2. The broom portion It is made of the usual broom material, with the frame structure I2 fixedly and centrally positioned with respect to the opposite faces Illa of the broom portion ID. The top l3 of said frame structure is spaced a relatively short distance downwardly from the top of the broom portion and the opposite sides I4 of the frame structure are flared slightly outwardly from each other to accomplish their positioning parallel with and just under the surface of the opposite side edges lob of the broom portion, while the bottom I 5 is formed to provide a, pair of oppositely projecting nut engageable threaded terminals I5 which are adapted for retaining engagement with slot provisions in both the encasement portion I6 and the clasp members H (see Figs. 5, 6 and 7) as will be later explained.
The general structural character of the encasement portion I6 is shown particularly in the Figure '6 indicating its complete form and arrangement prior to being folded, on the broken lines X, into the form shown in the Figure 5 for engagement with its associated broom and clasp portions It and I? respectively.
It will be noted that both of the end parts of this encasement portion are identically formed, with but a single exception, that is, one end part has the mould-like edge IBa formed along its opposite sides I619, these mould-like edge formations being adapted for overlapping engagement with the opposite plain edges I of the sides I 611 on the other end part. shape of the opposite faces of the encasement portion accommodates the general form of the broom portion and facilitates the easy and ready replacement of the broom portion on occasion without the necessity of opening up the opposite faces of the encasement for that purpose.

To .replace the bIQOmj- 'DQIMQH 1:0 .-it is necessary only to remove the two wing ,-nuts 18 ,to allow the encasement with the broom portion :tO :be withdrawn, the broom pertion removed therefrom and anew. one inserted in the encasement which is then-placedibackin position betweenthe two clasp portions and the :nut members l8 screwed onto the-terminal to efiectthecomplete device for use.
Althoughthe strnctureras-herein set forth is .a practical and preferred 7exernp,lifit-zation of the device, .modificationsandchange is contemplated with respect-to the-scope of;the. appended claims, and theinventionis not-therefore, limited to-the specificnonstruction andarrgangement shown.

A hand broom of the type herein described comprising in combination a broom body portion, a supporting frame element integral with and positioned intermediate the opposite faces of the broom body portion, threaded members on said rame el m nt, a semen portion adjacent the upper portion of the broom ibody portion, said encasement portion having slot means there- ,in removably engaging said threaded members on the frame element, clasp elements mounted on 5211c encasement portion, slot means in the clasp elements engaging said threaded members, means for securing the frame element, the encasement q fijfiion, and clasp elements in assembled relationship with means formed on the clasp elemen-ts or removably mounting a handle member thereon.
