Description

Oct. 13, 1931. H. HERTZBERG MOP Filed July 27, 1929 28 INVENTOR 285k Gila/5 70 7&6 TORNEY Patented Oct. 13, 1931 HARRY HERTZBERG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK MOP Application filed July 27, 1929. Serial No. 381,593.
This inventionrelates to mops.
An object of this invention is to provide a mop having practical and efficient means for quickly assembling and disassembling the parts thereof, so that unskilled persons such as the ordinary housewife using the mop, may be able to disassemble the mop for convenient cleaning and storing.
' Another object of this invention is to provide a mop of the character described having means for permitting a thorough and efficient cleaning of corners and the like difficulty accessible places.
A further object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and rugged mop of the character described which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture, comprise few and simple parts, easy to assemble and disassemble, and withal practical and efficient to a high 20 degree in use.
Other objects of'this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a map embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, elevational view of a portion of the handle and a mop frame illustrating the connection between the handle and frame;
Fig. 3 is a top, plan view of the mop frame made in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, elevational view of a modified construction of the handle attaching means with parts broken away; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, side elevational i iew of the attachment hinge means shown in Fig. 7 is a fragmentary, side,, elevational view of the connection between the handle of the mop frame, with parts shown in crosssection.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 10 designates a mop embodying the invention comprising a swab 11 mounted on a frame 12 connected to a handle 14. The swab 11 is preferably made in two portions 15 and 16, each comprising a sleeve member 17 made of canvas or the like material, and having a large number of depending fibres 18 sewed thereto as at 19. Preferably, each of said portions 15 and 16 terminates in an end open portion 20, within which are inserted and attached a small bunch of fibers 21 and which project substantially forwardly therefrom for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The sleeve portions 17 are adapted to be mounted on the frame 12 now to be described in greater detail.
Said frame is preferably made of a single piece of wire bent and shaped into a substantially triangular form, and comprises a pair of converging arms 24, 25, having free end portions 24a, 25a terminating adjacent each other, forming two sides of the triangle. The third side of the triangle is formed by a pair of arms 26, 27 extending from arms 24, 25 respectively and connected to said arms by bent portions 26a, 27a respectively. Extending from said arms 26, 27, respectively, are a pair of superimposed, contacting inwardly projecting portions 28, 29 interconnected by a looped portion 30 bent somewhat upwardly above the plane of the triangle. The arm 27, connected to the upper arm 29, may be somewhat downwardly inclined as shown in Fig. 2, so that the outer bent portions 26a, 27a will be substantially in the same plane.
It will now be clear that the swab portions 15 and 16 may be attached to the frame memher 12 by threading the sleeve portions '17 thereof, onto the arms 26 and 27. The length of the swab portions 15 and 16 is such that they will extend entirely about the triangular frame to provide a large mopping surface, and the end portions 20 of said portions, will extend somewhat beyond the ends 24a, 25a of the arms 24, 25, to form a pair of forwardly extendin turfs 21 to facilitate cleanin of corners and the like, otherwise difficult to reach.
Means is provided for detachably connecting the handle 14 to the frame 12. To this end a member 13 made of a single piece of coiled wire is provided, said member having an upper portion 35,'the convolutions of Y which are substantially of the diameter of the handle 14. The inner portions of said convolutions 35 are preferably of somewhat smaller diameter than the outside diameter of said handle for a purpose hereinafter appearing. The lower portion36 of said member 13 is formed with a number of convolutions 37 having a reduced diameter, said portion 36 preferably slightly tapering towards theouter, free end thereof. The handle 14 is'in the form of theusual elongated rod made of wood or the like material and the lower end '38 thereof is preferably formed with a helical screw treaded groove'for receiving the inner. portions of the convolutions which constitute the female screw portion.
It willnow be clear that the handle may be screwed into the interiorof'the upper portions'of member 13"for quickly detachably connecting the same to said member. Receivedwithin the lower portion 36 of said .member13 area pair of symmetrical m'enr It will now be seen that boththe handle 14 and the swab portions 15 and 16 may be quickly detached or removed from the frame to'permit cleaning of the several parts of the mop. I
Furthermore the looped portion 30 extends somewhat above the triangular arms of the frame 12 to facilitate the connection of said frame to the arms 42 of member 39.
In accordance with the modified construction-shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the handle 14a is rigidly secured to a pair of symmetrical arms 39a as by riveting, or otherwise securingfportions 50 of said frames to the lower end of said handle as clearly shown at 50a in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Extending from said portions 50 are inwardly projecting portions 51 terminating in parallel, spaced spring arms 52. Said spring arms 52 are formed on the. outer ends 53 thereof with inwardly punched portions 54 constituting projections receivable within the opening 45 of the loop 30 for pivotally mounting the frame 12 to the handle 14a. For detaching the handle 14a from the frame 12 it is merely necessary to somewhat separate or spread the arms 52, thus releasing the projections 54 from the looped portion 30. Obviously, for reattaching the handle to the frame, it is merely-necessaryto again spreadthe arms 52 topermit the loop to be positioned for aligning the projections 54 with the opening 45.
Release of the arms ,52 will then cause the ends 53 thereof to press inwardly to bring the projections 54 somewhatwithinthe opening 45 to form the hereinabove described pivotal connection. a i f 1 ut will thus be seen that there is provided a devicein which the several objects of this invention are achieved, andwhich is 1 well adapted to meet the :cenditions'of practical,
use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the'above 1nvent1on, and as varlous changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to 'be understood that all matter herein set forth or shownin the accompanying drawingsis to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.
Having thusdescribed my invention 21' Patent: I 1
1. A mop frame made ofa single piece of wire bent to form a pair of'converging arms having free ends, portions extending from said arms toward each other, and portions extending inwardly from saidlast named portions and terminatingin a single,'interconnecting loop forming a bearing opening,
saidinwardly extending portions being superimposed, said loop being disposed in a plane perpendicular to'theplane of said frame.
2, In a mop of the character described, in
combination, 'a frame having aloop' forming a bearing, a swab mounted on said frame, a-
handle and means for removably securing said handle to said frame, said meanscomprising a coiled member, said handle'having a screw threaded groove receiving a portion of said coile d member, and a member received in another portion of said coiledmember, and pivoted to the bearing portion of said frame. 7
3. A mop frame madeof a-single piece of wire bent to form a pair of converging arms, portions extending from said arms toward each other and portions extending inwardly from said last named portions and terminatclaim as new and desire to secureby Letters ing in an interconnecting loop forming a bearing opening, said loop being disposed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said frame.
4. A mop frame made of a single piece of Wire bent to form a pair of arms and portions extending from said arms toward each other and terminating in an interconnecting loop forming a bearing opening, said loop being disposed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said frame.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
