Be it known that we, SoLoMoN CAN'ron, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, and HAYMAN GoNnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Broom, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved broom having a reversible, double-ended broom body to insure long life to the broom,

Another object is to permit of conveniently removing a worn out body and re placing it by a new one.

Another object is to render the use of brooms exceedingly economical. by using the same handled frame with a number of reversible and detachable broom bodies.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in'

which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the broom with the cover and a portion of the frame shown in section;

The broom in its general construction consists of a double-ended body 10, a frame 11, a handle 12 and a retaining means for removably holding approximately about a half portion of the body 10 in position in the frame. The body 10 is made of straight broom corn or other suitable broom material. In the middle ortion of thebody 10 adjacent the sides thereof are embe ded spaced concave members 15, 16, preferably' made of wire, with the members at the sides is provided at the middle with the usual Ytransverse rows of stitching 25 intermediate the spaced members 15, 15 and 16, 16, thus drawing the outer portions of the broom material against the convex members 15, 16 to cause the sides of the body to flare from the middle outwardly toward both ends, as yill be readily understood by reference to The frame 11 is made approximately U- shape with the sides '30 converging to conform to the flaring or diverging sides of each half of the body 10, with a view to securely hold approximately a half portion of the body 10 in position on the frame 1l. The sides 30 and ends of the frame 11 are made approximately U-shape in cross section with reinforcing ribs 31 extending along the said sides and ends to render the frame exceedingly strong and durable. The frame is preferably made in two parts having shanks 32 in which is secured the inner end of the handle or stick 12. By reference to Fig. 2, it will be noticed thatthe sides 30 terminate approximately at the middle of the body 10 and hence approximately onehalf of the body 10 projects beyond the sides, to be used for sweeping purposes.

In order to drawthe sides 30 together and to provide means for securely holdin g the upper half portion of the body 10'in position in the frame, use is made of retaining means, preferably in the form of two wire frames 40 and 41, pivoted in bearings 42 arranged on one side 30 and extending across and in contact with the front and rear faces of the body 10. The free ends of the members 40 and 41 terminate in interlocking loops 43, 44 engaged by a pin 45 to hold the loops in position and thereby hold the members 40 and 41 under tension. vIt is understood that when the locking pin 45 is withdrawn from the loops 43, 44 then the retaining members 40 and 41 are unlocked and can be swung into an open position to allow the sides 30 to spring back and to permit of convenient removal of the body 1Q from the frame. In case the outer sweeping end of the body has been used up, the body is taining members 40 and ALl fastened together by the pin and reinserted in the loops d3, 4d. It is understood that the members 40 and al firmly clamp the body il() between them and as the members are at* tached to the iframe sides 30 it is evident that the broom body l0 is securely fastened in place.

A hood or cover 50 of suitable textile material is preferably fitted over the frame ll to inclose the upper portion of the broom body and the retaining means 40, dl, to protect these parts against dust and to enhance the appearance of the broom.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent e l. A broom provided with a double ended broom body made of straight broom ma terial rigidly connected7 spaced concave members embedded in the said broom ma` terial approximately midway between the ends of the broom body and a distance from eacli of the sides, and a binding extending across the said body intermediate the said spaced concave members at each side to flare the sides from the middle toward the ends in an outward direction.
