To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY Fonnsrnn, a subject of the Kingof Great Britain, of the town of Portage la Prairie, Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in brooms, and the object of my invention is to provide a broom-head to which the handle is detachably connected so that in case of breakage thereof, another handle may be readily substituted. Another object of my invention is to provide a broom which can be mounted in and readily removed from the said head so that the worn stump can be replaced by a new broom, and without the necessity of having to provide a new broom. Further objects of my invention will be hereinafter particularly set forth, and what I claim as new will be set forth in the claim forming part of this specification.

A is the broomhead, and the same is made of metal of the desired gage, though it may be cast, and the same comprises a bottom plate B, provided with a flange C projecting beyond the inner side of said plate. Trans versely of the head A is positioned a plate D substantiall of the same width or depth as the flange C and suitably secured to said flange. Suitable bracing plates E are positioned within said head A, and extend from the plate D to the portion C of the flange F is a plate suitably secured to the flange C, so as to encase bracing plates E and D in the upper portion of the head A. The plate D and the portion C of the flange C are provided with holes a and 7) through which passes the handle G. Any suitable means such as a screw H may be held in the plate F and screw into the han dle G so as to prevent the accidental withdrawal of this handle.

Sufiicient has been set forth to show that in case the handle G be broken, the same may be readily removed from the head A and replaced.

That portion of the bottom plate B and the adjacent portions of the flange C e2:-

constitute a fixed jaw member, and co-acting with this jaw member is a movable jaw member I, which is hinged to the plate F' as shown at J.

The broom 2 may be constructed as is common in the art, though before it can be mounted in the head A, it must be properly shaped. Now I secure to the inner end 3 of the broom 2, by any suitable means such as glue, a cross-bar 4, and remove portions of said inner end at each side of the broom 2, so as to form pockets 5 adjacent the cross bar 4:. When the broom 2 is placed upon the bottom plate B, the ends 6 of the crossbar 4. pass between pins 7 carried by the flange C at each end of the plate D and said plate D, so that said pins, when said broom is positioned, will be located within the pockets 5. 8 are prongs or spurs carried by the bottom plate D so that when the broom 2 is positioned, these prongs or spurs will penetrate the same, and assist in holding same from displacement. 9is a prong or spur carried by the jaw-member I, and also designed to penetrate the broom 2 when said jaw-member is closed. The means described or the equivalent thereof,'it is abundantly clear, will prevent the accidental withdrawal of the broom 2 from said head A.

Screws 11 or other suitable removable fastening means are passed through the cars 10 and through holes 12 formed in the flange C, and penetrate each side of the broom 2 and so look the j aw-member I closed. To reduce the cost of manufacturing the broom 2, the broom corn composing the same may be bound together at the inner end of the broom by any suitable fabric 13 such as cotton or linen, in place of sewing the broom corn, and the cross-bar 4 0011- nected to the said inner end 3, will positivelyprevent distortion of the broom 2.
