UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE. f
YRICHARD RABY, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
BeoM-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 536,295, dated March 26, 1895.
Application tiled December 13, 1894. Serial No. 531,666. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD RABY, a citi` zen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved broomhead.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is simple, light and cheap, and which maybe Very readily opened for the insertion of new broom straw and securely closed in order to clamp or hold the straw in the form of a broom. Y
The invention will be hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder. Fig. 2 isa vertical section'on the line a-a of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a partial Vedge view showing the manner of connecting the sections, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line b-b of Fig. 2.
My improved vbroom-head consists of two separable sections each having two side arms `l, lower connecting bars'2 which form the clamp to hold the broom straw, and upper cross bars or plates 3 which confine the ends of the straw betweenthem. The main section A has also a fiat top plate 4 which, together with the side bars 3, forms a box-like receptacle for the ends of the straw. Extending upward from the center of this plate is a socket forthe broom handle. The ends of the plate 4 have notches 6 adjacent to the arms 1 and projections 7 adjacent to the notches.
The smaller section B of the broomhead has its side arms l extended upward and formed into hooks 8 which are rounded at the back 9 and provided with notches 10 in front. The cross bar 3 of the movable sec. tion is provided with aprojection 11 which is adapted to enter the lower endv of the socket to sustain the cross bar and prevent it from bulging outward. The clamp 2 is connected by screws or bolts 12. Y
To ll Vthe broom-head, the section A is laid down and the broom corn placed init and properly arranged,- with the upper or cut ends close to the top plate 4. The section B is then applied in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3
by engaging the hooks 8 with the notches in the ends of the top plate. The lower end of section Bis then pressed down and connected with the lower clamping bar of the section A by means of the screws or bolts. The manner of interlocking the hooks on the section B with the notches in the top plate 4 very securely connects the two sections together and prevents relative movement of any kind.
.Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture a broomhead composed of two separable sections,
each section having two side arms, an upper cross-plate'3 and a lower clamping bar, one
.of said sections having a fiat top plate 4 provided with a socket for the handle and with notches in its ends, and the other section having its side arms extended upward and formed with notched hooks adapted to interlock with the sides of the notches in the top plate, a projection ll on the upper edge of the cross'i plate adapted to enter the socket to brace said cross plate, and means for connecting the lower clamping bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD BABY.
