BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,557, dated September 5 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM BARNEY OAR- TER,of St. Maurice, in the parish of lVinn and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Bedstead Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bed clothes clamps; and it consists in the novel and convenient device hereinafter de scribed for holding bed clothes in position.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved means for holding the respective sides of the covering to the bed rails which is especially designed for childrens beds and which will preclude the possibility of their removal while the occupant is asleep and thus avoid the injurious results consequent upon such removal.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed provided with my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the clamping device. Fig. 4c is a detail view of the clamping bar.

A, designates the side rails of the bed and B, the bed covering which is to be held in position. A bar C, hinged between its ends as shown at D, extends parallel with the bed rail on each side of the bed, being pressed downward on top of the covering so as to be substantially flush with said side rails. To each end of said rails is secured a clamp E, which in form resembles an inverted U. Upon the inner end of the clamp is the stud F, which engages the side of the bar 0, extending upward within said clamp and by this manner a secure hold is obtained upon the bar. As will be seen and readily understood the outer end of the clamp extends over the side rail and downward thereon and being formed of spring metal grasps tightly the same. The lower end of each clamp is provided with a ring G, for conveniently disengaging the same from the rail 0 when being removed. Each bar 0, is hinged between its ends as shown so that the forward end or portion of each bar may be turned up thus freeing the forward end of the covering so that the occupant may be placed in the bed, after which the bar is turned down and the covering securely held so that it cannot be kicked OR or otherwise removed by the sleeper.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a bed rail, the longitudinal and removable clamping strip hinged between its ends and formed with one or more recesses, spring clamps E adapted to clasp the said rails, and studs F on said clamps, which enter the recesses of the said removable rail, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a bed rail, a clamping bar formed with recesses, clasps or clamps adapted to span the rail and bar, and projections F on said clasps which engage the recesses of said bar,substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of a bed rail, a bar extending longitudinally therewith which is formed in two sections which are hinged at their adjacent ends, and clamps for holding the free ends of the bar to the said rail, substantially as shown anddescribed.
