Description

(No Model.)
B. P. REILLY. CLOTHES CLAMP.
No. 525,029. Patented Aug. '28, 1894.
PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMJAN P. REILLY, OF GENOA, ILLINOIS.
CLOTH ES-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,029, dated August 28, 1894. Application filed December 1,1893. $erialNo. 492,508- on model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMAN P. REILLY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Genoa, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clamps for holding bedclothes t0 the bedstead, and I aim to produce an invention of this nature which shall be easily adjusted to the side or foot boards of a bedstead, by means of clamps, one en gaging the under side of the side board, another clamping the clothes over the upperv edge of side or foot rail, one of the said clamps carrying a pawl adapted to engage with notches on the arm of a second clamp, and a rubber washer about the arm of the pawl carrying clamp, through which washer extends the prolonged notched arm of the clothes clamp, thus bringing the notches on said arm and the pawl in engaging positions. This rubber washer also serves to protect the side rails of a bed from being marred, which would be the case if the metallic clamps come directly in contact with the finish on the side rails.
My invention consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts through the several views, and inwhich- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention as attached to the rail of a bed, and clamping the clothes to the said rail. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of the clamps, pawl and rubber washer.
Reference now being had to the details of clearly illustrated in the.
the drawings by letter, A, represents the side board of an ordinary bed stead, B an L- shaped clamp with an elongated arm I), and is adapted to fit over the upper edge 'of the side rail or board. On the front side of the arm I), when the said clamp is in an engaging position, are the notches G.
D is a second L-shaped clamp but somewhat larger than the clamp B, so as to engage the wider portion at the lower edge of the side rail. This second clamp has a short arm 0, with its free end bent outwardly, said end carrying the pawl d. Over the arm 0, is stretched the washer F, with a portion of said washer extended up the side of the bed board, to protect the finish on the bed stead. The arm 1) passes between the vertical members forming the arm 0, and through the said rubber washer, and the pawl pivoted to the end of the arm 0, falls by gravity in engagement with the notches of the arm I), thus holding the two clamps, the one holding over the upper edge of the side board, where the bed clothes are held, the other holding on the under side of said board, thus securely holding the clothes from being thrown 0E, as is the case frequently with restless children.
The simplicity and advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated, as the clamps can be easily adjusted to any bed board, and effectually holding the clothes on the bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
\ The combination, in a clamp for securing bed clothes, of two L-shapedpartsone having an elongated notched arm the other being provided with an outwardly bent portion,
a rubber washer encircling this outwardly bent portion, through which the notched arm of the other part passes, and a pawl carried by the outwardly bent arm, engaging the notches on the elongated arm substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
I BENJAMAN P. REILLY.
I Witnesses:
CHAS. CORSON,
J. L. GoRsoN.
