MATTRESS-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6,1915.
Application filed June 19, 1914. Serial No. 846,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHOLD G. MAR- QUARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n that class of mattress springs which are provided with mattress guards, and it pertains more especially, among other things, first to the device for pivotally supporting such guards at their respective ends in such a manner that they may be folded from the vertical position at right angles to the spring down upon the mattress spring in a horizontal position parallel with the upper surface of such spring, whereby a less space is required for the spring when packing, storlng or shipping the same. Second, to the device for adjusting the tension of, or taking up slack in such guard.
My invention is further explained by'reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 represents a plan view thereof provided with my improved guard as 1t appears when such guard is in a vertical position. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one corner of the mattress spring provided with my improved guard, and Fig. 4 is an end view of an adjustable guard supporting bracket shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
1 is a mattress spring of ordinary construction.
2 is a mattress guard. The mattress guard 2 is supported from the spring supporting frame 3 by the bolt 4, bracket 5, spiral spring 6, and intermediate plates 7. The bracket 5 is provided with a downward extending member 8 through which the bolt 4 passes. Said member 8 is provided with an angular block 9 which may be either formed integrally with said plate 8 or of a separate piece of metal and interposedbetween said plate and the frame member 3, as shown in said Fig. 2, whereby as the nut 10 is turned down on said bolt 4, said bracket 5 is drawn back from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that indicated by dotted lines 11 in said figure, whereby the tension on said mattress guard 2, spring 6 and intermediate plate 7 is increased. Thus it is obvious that any slack which may incidentally occur in the mattress guard, may be taken up by turning down said nut 10 and said guard may be retained under the required tension.
The mattress guard is shown in a vertical position by the full lines 12 in Fig. 4, and while the dotted lines 13 in said figure indicate the guard in an inclinedposition as it appears in the act of being turned down upon the upper surface of the spring 1.
It will be understood that when the bracket 5 is turned down to a horizontal position, the spring 6 will be brought to a hori- Zontal plane upon the upper surface of the mattress 1. It will also be understood that a similar bracket 5, may, if desired, be pro vided at each end of the mattress guards 2, as shown in Fig. 1, or at one end only of such guard.
It will also be understood that the angular brackets 5 located at the respective ends of the mattress frame serve to prevent the mattress from sliding longitudinally upon themattress spring 1-, while the mattress guard together with such angular bracket 5 co operate to prevent'the mattress from sliding transversely to the mattress spring.
Having thus described mv invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a spring supporting frame for mattresses of an angular bracket, a bolt for pivotally supporting said bracket from said frame. an angular bearing interposed between aid bracket and said frame, a mattress guard, means for connecting one end of said guard to said bracket, said angular bearing being adapted to serve as a fulcrum upon which said bracket is adapted to be inclined rearwardly as the nut is turned down on said bolt against said bracket and the tension of said mattress guard thereby increased.
2. The combination with the supporting frame of a mattress spring, of an angular bracket, a bolt for pivotally connecting said bracket to said frame, a mattress guard. means for connecting one side of said bracket to one end of said guard, an angular block interposed between said bracket and said mattress frame, said bracket being adapted to be turned down from a vertical to a horizontal position, whereby said guard In testimony WhereofI a'fii'x my signature is caused to bear upon the upper surface of in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
said spring, said bracket being also adapted as the nut is turned down on said bolt to be REINHOLD MARQUARDT inclined rearwardly over said angular bear- Witnesses:
ing, whereby the tension of said mattress JAs. B. ERWIN,
guard is increased. IRMA D. BREMER.
