UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHESTER D. FLYNT, OF BROOKLYN, NE-W YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CA'R'SEATS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,626, dated February 17, 1574; application filed July 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, CHESTER D. FLYNT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Seat; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents `a sectional plan or top view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof in the plane a: m, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar section in the plane z z. Fig. et is an inverted plan view of a portion of my seat.

This invention consists in the arrangement and combination, in a car-seat, of interwoven elastic strips of metal with supporting or clamping bars placed endwise of such seat on opposite sides thereof, and with coiled springs which are connected with each other and with said supporting-bars in such a manner that said springs are uniformly steadied, and an elastic and durable seat is obtained. With said seat is combined a cushion provided with elastic clamping-hooks that Icatch over said supporting bars, wherebyr such cushion is firmly held in position on the seat, and at the same time can be taken off and put on at will.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the frame of my car-seat, on which are placed bolts or bars B B, the same being arranged endwise of such seat on the sides thereof to strengthen the frame. Said bolts or bars are let into the edge of the frame on the ends thereof, and they are tightened or clamped by means of nuts a a, working on a screw thread on one end of the bars. O O desig-y nate elastic strips of metal, which are interwoven and form the bottom for my seat.
Such seat or bottom has a curved back, and is l sustained at the sides of the frame on the supporting or clamping bars B B, the ends of said interwoven strips being hooked or bent over such bars, and by thus supporting the seat it acquires greater elasticity, the ends of said strips being unconfined, and moving freely on said supporting-bars in a vertical direction.
A bolt or bar may also be placed at the ends of the frame A, to support the longitudinal series of the strips O C; but in this eX- ample I have rigidly secured the same to the end of the frame.
Beneath the interwoven strips O O in the frame A are a number of conical coiled or upholstery springs, D D, being. supported on cross-pieces in said frame, and such springs are united or connectedv with each other and with the supporting-bars by wires b b, and by these means the springs are firmly held in an upright or vertical position. A pad or cushion, E, is placed on the surface of the interwoven strips O, being attached to the .supporting-bars B by hooks c c, theshanks of which are secured to an elastic strip, d, on said cushion, whereby such hooks are retained on said supporting-bars, and the cushion is firmly held in position on the seat, and at the same time, by extending the elastic strip the hooks can be unhooked and the cushion can be readily removed or replaced, as may be desired.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l. The arrangement and combination, in a car-seat, of the interwoven elastic strips O with supporting or clamping bars B B, and with coiled springs D D, which are connected with each other and with the supporting-bars B B, by wires b b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the elastic strips d, having at each end the hooks c c, with the bars B, and cushion E, arranged to operate in respect to springs D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
