To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J orINsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Warba, in the county of Itasca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Tighteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to beds and has special reference to a bed-spring tightener and means for securing a woven wire spring to its frame.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved form of tightener for woven wire bed-springs.
Another object of the invention is to improve the manner of securing the fixed ends of such springs so that they may run the entire length of the bed.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the preferred form of bed-spring tightener. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of one corner of the operating end of the device. Fig. 3 is a vertical median section through the operating end of the device. Fig. A is a vertical sectional view of a bearing used at one end of the roller. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the lower end or foot of the bed-spring. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a modified form of the spring. Fig. 7 is a partial plan view thereof. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 88 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 99 of Fig. 7.
In both the forms herein shown there is provided a frame which consists of side rails 10, a head rail 11, and a foot rail 12. At the head end of the bed there is provided on one side a vertical slot 13 which is formed in one of the side rails 10 adjacent to the end rail. This slot 13 constitutes a bearing slot, as will be hereinafter set forth. The opposite rail is provided with a recess 14- and to this opposite rail is secured a member 15 having an upwardly curved end 16 which constitutes a continuation of the bearing formed by the recess 14. It is obvious that both ends may be arranged alike, as disclosed in Fig. 2, where the slot 13 is dispensed with and a plate 17, similar to the plate 15, is utilized in connection with a recess 18. In like manner, both sides may be provided. with a vertical slot as disclosed in Figs. 8 and 9, wherein the rail opposite the slot 13 is provided with a vertical slot 19 having a cover plate 20. In the form shown in Figs. 6 to 9, keepers 21 are positioned at each side of the slot 13, and a cover plate 22 is mounted to slide through these keepers and cover the upper end of the slot 13. With either of these forms there is used a roller 23 having reduced journal ends 24 which fit within the bearings formed by the recesses or slots. On one of the ournal ends 24 there is fixed a ratchet 25 which fits within a suitable recess 26 formed in the side rail 10. Adjacent the recess 26 the rail is recessed, as at 27, and pivoted within the recess 27 is a pawl 28, which may be swung outward as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 7. A crank handle 29' is provided for the purpose of turning the roller 23.
In the preferred form of the invention the side rails are slotted, as indicated at 30, and there is provided for the fixed end of the woven wire fabric a clamp comprising plates 31 and 32, the latter being somewhat longer than the plate 31. The woven wire fabric 33 is secured by passing its end between the two plates 31 and 32 and then screwing these tightly together. These plates are of such length that the plate 32 slides within the slot 30, and the slot and plates are so arranged that the plate 31, when the clamp is in position in the side rails, contacts with the end rail 12 and limits the movement of the plate 32 in the slot 30. The fabric 33 may also be secured by means of a clamp 34, or screwed tightly to the foot-rail 12, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7; but the preferred form is that shown in Fig. 1. This fabric is wound around the a necessary to swing the pawl out to the slots. There has thus been provided a sim-' ple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

In combination with a bed including a frame having side rails provided with oppositely disposed slots adjacent one end, said slots being inclined downwardly and toward the opposite end of the bed, said bed further having an end rail extending between the side rails adjacent the lower ends of said slots, and a bed spring clamp comprising a pair of members, one of said members being longer than the other and projecting downward below the other whereby the same may fit within said slots, the remaining member being arranged on the side of the first to engage the top of the end rail and limit the movement of the clamp downward.
