Description

G. C. PERKINS.
GEORGE ROBERTS, Admr. BED-Bowan FRAME. No.171,042. Patented ne.14,1a75.
NPETESIS. PHOTO-LITMDGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D KJ4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE C. PERKINS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, (GEORGE ROBERTS, ADMINISTRATOR.)
IMPROVEMENT lN BED-BOTTOM FRAMES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,042, dated December 14, 1875; application tiled August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. PERKINS, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Elastic Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the gures indicate the same parts.
My invention relates to that class of bedbottoms which consist ot' an elastic material stretched lengthwise upon a rigid frame, to the end bars of which it is attached.
The object of my invention is to tighten or relax the web, as may be desired, to suit dit ferent persons, and also to provide a means of slackening the tension sui'iiciently to permit of taking the frame apart for transportation.
My invention consists in a peculiar form and arrangement ot' screws and slides attached to the corners of the frame, by means ot which one ofthe bars to which the elastic web is attached may be moved back and forth. Screws have been applied to this purpose here tot'ore, but in a different manner to that shown in my present invention.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of one corner ot' a bed-frame having my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same corner. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the screw and sliding plate, detached from the side bar of the frame, and tbe end bar which sustains the web, in order to show the parts more distinctly. Fig. 4 is a view ofthe sliding plate from its inner end.
A is one of the side bars of the bed-frame. B is one of the end bars to which the web C is att-ached. C is an elastic web, shownin the drawing as made of coiled-wire springs. D is a sliding plate "of iron or other metal, resting against the side bar A, and having the lips d d embracing it above and below. It is also provided with a slot, e, through which the screwf passesto hold it against the side of the bar A. The end bar B is secured in a socket, g, by screws, in the usual manner. E is a long screw, turning in a collar, F, attached to the end of the side bar A, and against which the head of the screw rests. Gis aout fitting the screw E. This nut rests in a socket in the plate D, formed by projections u'pon its inner side, as shown at a a, Snc., Figs. 3 and 4. This nut rests in its socket in such a manner that it can be easily placed in position or removed. The head h of the screw E is made square, or of suitable form to be turned with a wrench.
By means of my invention any ordinary screw with a square head and nut can be used. It can be made as long as desired, and is-not liable to bend or break, as it acts only in tension.
The side bars remain always of the same length, and have no projecting screwliable to be bent Or broken.
By clamping the plate D agaiustthe rail A by means of the screw j', the screw and nut E G can be at any time removed and replaced.
What I claim as my invention isl. The combination Of the sliding plate D and detachable adjusting screw-bolt and nut E G with the side rail A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The plate D, provided with the projections a a, in combination with the nut G, as described, whereby the nut is held in place, and can also be released when desired, substantially as set forth.
3. The combina-tion of the plate D, having the projections a a, with the detachable adjustin g screw-bolt and nut E G and plate F, when constructed and arranged substantially as described.
GEORGE c. PERKINS.
