JOHN C. CLIME,v OF PHILADELPHIA, IENNSYLVAN-IA, ASSIGNOR 'lO HIM- SELF AND J. MOORE HENDRICKS, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent .No.'77,457,datecl May 5,1868. i
IMPROVED BEDSTEAD-FASTENER.
TO'ALL WHOM I'I MAY `CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. GLME, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full' and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part thereof, in which drawings- Figure 1 isa top view of a. bedstcad with my improvements applied thereto. 4
Figure 2 is a'vertical section of one ofthe bed-posts, and of a portion of a-rail, and of the device-which I employ for fastening the rails to the posts. `V A v.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of said device detached, showing the screw-cap removed.
The improvements herein described relate to those'for which Letters Patent were granted to mc and J. Moore Hendricks jointly, as assignees of myself, March 17, 1868,'and they consistl First, of a device for fastening the bed-rails and-posts together.
Second, of a mode of arranging-two bars for supporting-the middle springs in relation t'o the bottom sluts ofthe bed, so thatthe elasticity of the bed-bottom is preserved when tire'bed is occupied byhcavier persons.
Third, in an arrangement of the screws employed for tightening and relaxing the springs.
In the drawings, A are'thc two bars for supporting the middle springs, arranged as shown in iig. 1.
The thumbscrews B B, for supporting and adjusting the head-bar, are arranged-so as to be operated from the inside of the rail, with the vieiv of cconcmizing space and improving the outside appearance of the bedstead, while they are more easily got at.'
Instead of forming on the ends of theA rails the ordinary tenen, and 'employing a separate screw-bolt to unite the rails with the posts, I supply the device represented -in iig. 3, consisting of the screw-bolt Cand solid metallic block, D, in one piece. When the screw-bolt, C, is in place, as represented in fig. 2, the block d forms a tcnon, which enters the corresponding mortise in the post,'and the screw-cap E being applied to the projecting end of the bolt C, as shown, the rail and post are firmly joined together.
The bolt C and tenon-block D may be of iron, cast in 'a single piece, or they may benlnde separately and then united by shrinking the block on the bolt, or in any other way desired. The blocks D may be square at the ends, but I prefer to-rcake them with rounded ends, as'shown in iig. -3, because the corresponding mortises can be more economically made; and, although I have not found it necessary, holes may bc bored, it' desired, throughblock d for the insertion of additional screws for securingY said block to the rail.
The screw-cap E may be'made of iron, tinned or bronzed, or it may be made of brass; and it may have any ornamental shape desired. The cap is' adjusted or removed bylmeans of a wrench.
Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The device, consisting of the bolt C and tenen-block D, in one piece, and screw-cap E, in combination with the rails and parts .of n bedstead, for fastening said rails and. parts together.
' I JOHN C. CLIME.
