Letters Patent No. 97,314, dated November 30, 1869.
IMPROVED CHAIR-SPRING.
The Schedu1e-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TURNER C. PURINGTON, of Lincoln, in the county of Placer, and State ot' California, have invented a certain new and improved Chair-Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description oi' the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates toa certain improvement in attaching the ordinary spiral springs to the two front legs of a chair, whereby rockers are entirely dispensed with.
In the drawings- Figure l is an elevation of the spring, with one leg i-u position in the nut or step.

The nut A is made of metal, and is provided with a screw-thread, B, so that it can be screwed to the leg of an ordinary chair, and instead of weakening and splitting the leg, as in case where a hole is bored and a screw inserted to hold and attaclrthe step, my mode of attaching the nut or step serves to strengthen it.
'The nut can also be easily and quickly removed, and the chair be made to assume the ordinary posit-ion again, standing'v ou four legs.
The ease and convenience in applying the spring to the nut will be readily seen and appreciated. \Vith this end in view, I provide the top oi' the nut with a colla-r or shoulder, (l, and make a half f oval spiral or incline groove, D, around the outer surface of the nut, commencing at the base, so that by insertingr the small end of the spiral spring E in the groove, and turning it around, the top coil of the springr `will rest rmly in the upper part oi' the groove, nnler the shoulder or lip 'of the nut, and thus prevent doubling or oscillating from side to side, and the chair will resume all the soft and yielding-motion imparted to it hy the 'nearing down of the springs.

What I claim, and desireI tosocnre by Letters Patent, is In combination withv the spiral spring, the nut A, provided with an inner screw-thread, B, outer inclinogroove D, and shoulder substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
