Description

nl. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGHAP NATHAN STOCKlfE-LL, OF WINDSOR, 'NEW`YORK.
Leners Patent No. 89,252, dated Api-tz 2o, 1869.
IMPRovnn TABLE..
-*v I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making p'art of the same.
To all whom it 'ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN S'rocKwELL, of Windsor, in the county of Broome, in the State of `New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Tables, or Work-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the c0117 struction and operation of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of'` this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a-sectional view of the pedestal and stand, representing the general arrangement ofthe workingarts. p Figure 3 shows the annular plate to Vwhich the legs are attached, and the manner of closing it.
Similar letters of reference' indicate corresponding parts in eachgure.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an adjustable central screw-standard for tables, or other similar'purposes, capped with a nut and disk, which is attached to the centre of the lower surface of the table, and working in a sleeve and nut in the stand, so arranged that the table may be readily raised, or lowered, or turned around, and secured in position in such-a manner as to insure more stability, with less liability to derangement, and which maybe used in a more satisfactory and convenient manner than others now in use.l y
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I construct my table, A', of wood, kor other material used for similar purposes, with one or more tiers of drawers, B B, and an intermediate triangular recess,
'provided with drop-lids, O C, interlocking the body of the table with strips of wood at right angles with each other, and divide the top, A, intol one or more parts, and hinge them together.
On the centre of the table may be attached a frame, D, for a looking-glass, or for pictures.
. Y The pedestal, or stand, lig. 2, may be made of castiron, or other metallic substance'7 or of wood, with a metallic sleeve and nut, E, fitted into the body of the stand E, and secured by screws, G G.
I out a thread on the central screw-standard H, to about half its length, leaving a shank, I, for the adjustable thumb-screw J to set against'.
It will be seen, that in my invention, the screwstandard H works in the pedestal, or stand E, while, in other arrangements, it remains stationary in the stand, working in a nut in the body ofthe table, requiring a capf to cover its projecting end above the surface of the table. In my arrangement, the operation is reversed, and the surface may be made plain and unobstructed.
I scl'ew the upper end of the screw-standard H into the thimble-nut in the centre of the disk K, until it meets the'plate, which really gives to the top of the table sufficient steadiness and-security; b ut, for the purpose of giving it additional security, I provide a jam-nut, L, aud'thumb-sorew, m,
I also t a thumb-screw, n, into the thimblenut on the disk, which I attach to the centre of the lower surface ofthe table.
I attaoh'the legs o o o o to the annular vplate P, by means of notches in their edges, R R, and secure them in position with the wedge S, as represented.
The table may now be raised, or lowered, or turned around to any position desired, and securely held in place by means of the thumb-screw J.
I am aware that there are similar devices used for piano-stools. and chairs, which require no device to hold them in a fixed position, while, in this arrangement, it is quite important that the table should be immovable on its axis, particularly when used to write upon, which is one of the purposes for which it is designed. This is ei'ectually accomplished by means of the enlarged stem, or shank, I, of the screw-'standard H, which is securely held in the sleeve-socket E by the thumbscrew J This arrangement is only applicable to tables. Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the table A, screw standard H, sleeve-socket E, and set-screw J, with the standard F, ring P, and legs O provided with the notches R and -wedges S, all constructed and arranged substantially l GEO. M. Ricks,
G. F. LAKY.
