Description

- VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

JOHN o. sAN'rnn, on nUGitnsviLLn, PENNSYLVANIA.

IMPROVE BEA-DSTEAD-FASTENING.

Specification forming Dart ofiletters Patent Nn. 46,02.9, dated January-24,1885

perspective view of a lng, which is secured.

to the side rails of my improved bedstead, as hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 4 rep'- resents detached front and rear views of the lugs in the bed;po sts,v and Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the siderails attached. Siinilar'lelters ofreerehce indicate corresponding parts inthe several figures.'

-My invention consists," chiefly, f in an im'- proved manner of attaching the several parts of a bedstead bymeans of grooves and ribs,

dispensing with mortises, thus rendering allparts readily accessible for'eleansing, reducing the cost of manufacture, increasing the strength of the bedstead, and adapting it to be put together and taken a part with greater facility. j A

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it. V

In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the lposts of a bedstead, the middle parts of which are formed square. end rail, secured between the Aposts A A in the manner to be described. 'In each of the two inner square sides of the bed-postsA are I secured lugs E E, having senieylind-rical shanks, the convex vsides of which mayY` be formed'with angular ribs ec, while at their extreme ends, and at right angles to Atheir .flat faces, project seniieircular 4flanges e', as clearlyshown in Fig. 4. To fasten these lugs securely a hole is bored in the square part of the bed-posts, the lng is inserted,.and' a semi-cylindrical plu g, K, being properly glued, is driven along the .smoothV face of the lng until its end comes fairly home against the flange e', so as to ll up the hole, press the lribs e into the wood, and hold the. lug firmly B is an` in position. A square rib, It, of wood, and of Vthe saine width as the npperfpart of the lug E, extends downward from the lug, being fastened by means of nails or screws. Above the lug may extend upward another rib, R', in the lower end of'which is a recess, as clearly shown in Fig. L" `This upper rib, how.-`

' ever, is not essentially necessary. The upper par-t of thel lug', 'which is between the two ril\s,'l R, and projects out fr oln'the side of the bed-post, is formed with an oblique flange, E', clearly shown in Fig. 4. The ends of the side and end rail, B, are angularly grooved, On the inner side of this end rail, B, is a longitudinal recess, intowhich the lug (l fits snugly, the oblique liange C. on its'end protruding. inthegroove D of the end rail, and its circular head (D2 occupying a recess bored for it, so as to rmly secure the lngl against a 'longitudinal strain. n tne inner'aee or the lug C pins c c may be applied, which, being driven into the rail,assist in securing the lug in its recess. A rib, F, extending vertically across the lug C and fastened to the rail B by means of nails or serewsat each. end, holds the lug O in its proper position, all as shown 'in Fig-5.' When it is desired to fasten'the endrail to the posts, the ribs R Rlare held by the groove D, the lug C of the end rail B entering .the recess in the rib R above the lug E of the post, and the iiange C of the lug` Cv passing the ange E' of the lng E in such. a way that on sliding the end rail down the two flanges will;

be locked, andV thus hold the rail B securely A fastened to the post A. The upper ends, 'H II, of the head-board G project over the posts A A. In the under side of these'ends are holes, into which fit metal or wooden pins on the top end of the posts'A. The lower corners, H H, of the' head-board G may also be perforated, for the reception of hooks pro,-

jecting from the sides ofthe posts, or may have hooksi attached -to them, which4 engage in metallic loops or eyes t" on the inner/sides of thel posts A A, thus allowing the headboard' to be securely attached to the bed-frame between the posts A A, and also'to be quickly 'and easily detached when it is desired to take the bedstead to pieces.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The lugs C and E, constructed and apflzmges e', for securing the lugs e within the plied substantially as .herein shown and deg posts, substantially as and for the puposes scribed, to secure the parts of the bedsteads E 'herein set forth. together without mortises.

2. In combination with the above, the ribs Eli/,for affording an additional support to the rails.

3. Tho Combination of the plugs K and,

J. o. SANTEE.
