BED CONSTRUCTION. APPLICATION FILED AUG-H1 1912.
Patented Feb. 8,1916.
WILLIAM J. GaoTnNIIUIs, or cnIoAeo, rnnmois, AssIonon, BY nnsnn ASSIGN- MENTS, TO KINNEY-ROME COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A conrona'rron.
OF ILLINOIS.
BED CONSTRUCTION. 1
PatentedFeb. 8,1916.
Application filed August 14,1912. Serial No. 714,978.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM J. GRoTEN- HUIS, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Constructions,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of bed structures, having reference more particularly to that type of bed structures wvherein a rectangulanbed-spring frame is I structure of the rigid-corner type.
The principal objects which my present invention has in view are, first, to provide a simple and convenient means for-not only supporting the corners of the bed-spring frame upon the side-rails of the bed-stead frame, but also positively securing said corners to said side-rails, in order to prevent teetering of the bed-spring frame on its supports and insure a level and flat condition of the mattress-supporting surface of the bed-spring; second, to provide a simple and adjustable means for thus supporting a bed-spring upon, and securing it to bedstead frames of slightly different widths; and, third, to provide a simple and efficient construction for preventing accidental shifting, either laterally or lengthwise, of the bed-spring frame upon and relatively to the bed-stead frame.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a simple and approved embodiment of my invention as applied to bed constructions of both the cushion-corner and rigid-corner types; and referring thereto- Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of cooperating corner-portions of the bed-stead and bed-spring frames, illustrating the application of my invention to a bed of the spring or cushion-corner type, as illustrated in my patent above referred to. Fig; 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the application of my invention to a bed of the rigid- 7 corner type. Fig. 4 is a viewsimilar to Fig. 2 takenon the line l-1 of Fig. 3.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, 5 desig- I nates a corner post of the bed-stead frame,
and 6 is a side-rail thereof, this latter being of the angle-iron form extensively employed to form the side-rails of metalbeds.
7 designates an'end bar, 8 a tubular side bar, and 9 a connecting corner bracket or the bed-spring frame, a fragment of the mattress-supporting surface thereof being shown at 10. v
The bedspring frame here shown is elastically supported at its corners upon cushioning springs 11 that are housed within loop-shaped portions of the corner brackets. The lower endof the spring 11 rests in a cup-shaped seat 12 formed on a transverse supporting member that extends between and is stepped upon the side-rails 6 of the bed-stead frame. This transverse supporting member, as herein shown, consists of a pair of metal end castings each comprising an outer, .substantially flat portion 13 that is stepped directly upon the side-rails 6, the intermediate cup-shaped portion 12 forming the spring seat, and an inner shank portion 1 1; and an intermediate bar 15 rigidly'connected to and extending between the shank portions 14 of the end castings. Thisend casting is loosely"connectedto the corner bracket 9 in a manner to afford freedom of action to the spring 11 stepped on the upper surface of the --side'-" rails 6 of the bed-stead frame, is provided with a. longitudinal slot 17. Beneath the lug 13 is an attaching device comprising a clamp member 18 and a fastening bolt 19.
The clamp member is formed with an outer free end portion 20 that engages the under side of the side-rail, an intermediatevertical shoulder portion 21 that abuts against the inner edge of the side-rail, and an inner shank portion 22 that is formed with a bolthole to receive'the stem-of the bolt 19.-
' .In the rigid-corner construction shown in Figs." 3 and 4c, the corner bracket 23 is cast with an integral laterally projecting supporting lug 2 1 formed with a longitudinal slot 17; and cooperating therewith is a clamp member 18 having an outer free end portion 20, an intermediate vertical shoulder portion 21, and an inner shank portion 22 apertured to receive a bolt 19; this attaching mechanism being a duplicate of that shown and described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2.
The foregoin description, taken with the illustration, will make readily apparent both the simplicity of my invention and its capacity for securing the stated objects of the invention. It will be seen that by it the four corners of the bed-spring frame are clamped to the side-rails of the bed-stead frame so that the former is held level, and teetering or Warping is impossible. The clamping action, and the abutment of the shoulders 21 or 21 against the inner edges of the siderails of the bed-stead frame, effectually prevent either lateral or longitudinal shifting of the bed-spring frame upon the bed-stead frame; and the slots 17 or 17 permit adjustability of the supporting lugs and clamps to a fit upon bedstead frames which may vary in width to an extent not exceeding the adjusting capacity of the slots.
In either form of my invention the nut 25 on the fastening bolt engages the shoulder 26, whereby a sort of lock-nut is formed to prevent loosening of the clamp. The element 18 is composed of the upper and lower portions which overlap, the outer edge of the upper portion forming the shoulder 21, and the inner edge of the lower portion forming the shoulder 26, whereby both said element and said nut are held against turning about said bolt. As shown, said bolt 19 or 19 is formed at its upper-end with a screw head or other suitablemeans for rotating the bolt in the nut 25 when it is desired to fasten or unfasten the device.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described.
I claim- 1. In combination, a pair of bedstead side rails, a bed bottom having corner members and side bars disposed between said rails, and devices for securing the bed bottom in place on said rails, each device comprising a bed bottom supporting projection extendmg upon the adjacent rail, an element for engaging both the under side and the inner edge of said rail, and means for removably securing said element to the under side of said projection, said device having provislons for the adjustment of said element to- Ward and away from the adjacent side of the bed bottom, including a slot in said projection, and said means including a bolt in said slot, said bolt having a nut on the lower end thereof, said element having a shoulder for preventing rotation of said nut, and said bolt having its upper end provided with means for the rotation thereof to tighten or loosen said element.
2. In combination, a pair of bedstead side rails, a bed bottom having corner members and side bars disposed between said rails, and devices for securing the bed bottom in place on said rails, each device comprising a bed bottom supporting projection extending upon the adjacent rail, an element for engaging both the under side and the inner edge of said rail, and means for removably securing said element to the under side of said projection, said device, having provisions for the adjustment of said element and means toward and away from the adj acent side of the bed bottom, said element having upper and lower shoulders which face in opposite directions to respectively engage said rail and means, one said shoulder thereby holding said means to permit operation thereof.
3. In combination, a pair of bedstead side rails, a bed bottom having corner members and side bars disposed between said rails, and devices for securing the bed bottom in place on said rails, each device comprising a bed bottom supporting projection extending upon the adjacent rail, an element for engaging both the under side and the inner edge of said rail, and means for removably securing said element to the under side of said projection, said device having provisions for the adjustment of said element toward and away from the adjacent side of the bed bottom, said means including a nut, and said element having means for holding said nut against rotation.
4:- In combination, a pair of bedstead side rails, a bed bottom having corner members and side bars disposed between said rails, and devices for securing the bed bottom in place on said rails, each device comprising a bed bottom supporting projection extending' upon the adjacent rail, an element for engaging both the under side and the inner edge of said rail, and means for removably securing said element to the under side of said projection, said device having provisions for the adjustment of said element toward and away from the adjacent sine of the bed bottom, said element having upper and lower portions which overlap, the outer edge of the upper portion engaging the edge of said rail, and said means including a bolt provided with a nut which engages the inner edge of said lower portion, thereby preventing both said element and nut from turning about said bolt.
