To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONARD C. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Bed- Springs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to corner bed springs and refers more particularly to an attachment for supporting the corners of ordinary woven wire mattress springs.

Among the'salient objects of the invention are to provide a construction in which the corner springs may be readily and permanently clamped to the side rails and the wire mattress supported by and confined in position on said corner springs without the aid of any fastening or locking devices; to provide a construction in which the spring supports may be adjusted to fit various sizes of wire mattresses without detaching the supporting clamps from the side rails; to provide a construction in which the wire mattress may be removed by simply lifting it off the spring supports and the bed taken down without the aid of any tools; to provide a novel form of clamp for more effectively securing the spring supports to the side rails; to provide a construction which can be readily applied to rails of bedsteads and which can be economically manufactured; and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.

The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brass bedstead equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view'of one of my improved corner spring supports and showing the same attached to one of the side rails; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 2, the spring being shown in side elevation.

Referring to the drawings 1 and 2 designate respectively the head and foot pieces of the bed and 3 the side rails. Upon each side rail is supported a woven wire mattress spring 4: which is provided at either side with the usual supporting rods 5. Each of these rods is supported at either end by my improved spring support designated as a whole 6. Each of these spring supports comprises a clamp 7 and a peculiarly shaped spring 8. The clamps 7 are preferably made of spring steel in order that they may be fitted to the side rails of diflerent sizes. The upper face 9 of each clamp is provided with down turned lugs 10 and a bolt car 11. Thelower face 12 is similarly provided with a bolt ear 13 and inturned lugs 14L. The arrangement is such that when the clamps are secured to the side rails the down-turned lugs 10 fit over the upper outer edge of the latter and the upturned lugs 14L abut against the inside lower edge of the corresponding side rail. The clamps are locked to the rails by means of bolts 15 extending through the cars 11 and 13 and confined in position by means of wing nuts 15. It will be noted that the clamps are so fixed to the side rails as to be effectively braced and at the same time remove the strain from the bolts.

The upper and lower faces 9 and 12 of the clamps are provided with a plurality of alined apertures 16 adapted to receive the springs 8. Each of these springs comprises vertical legs 17 and V-shaped wings or in termediate portions 18, each of which is looped to form a coil 19 to give resiliency to the spring. The upper inclined portion of the wings terminate in a cradle portion 20 which is adapted to receive the rods 5 of the wire mattress spring, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1.

It will be noted that the spring supports 8 extend inwardly beneath the wire mattress so as to be eifectively concealed when in use, and that they may be readily adjusted, as heretofore stated, to fit any size spring.

The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a side rail of a bed of substantially angle iron form, of a spring clamp comprising a pair of opposed upper and lower side members connected by an end member, an up-standing lug carried by the lower face of the clamp and abutting against the inner side of the vertical member of said side rail, a downwardly projecting lug fitting over the upper end of said side rail, opposed locking ears extending beyond the vertical member of the side rail, a locking bolt extending through said lugs and secured thereto, the opposed faces of said clamp being provided with a plurality portion carried by the upper end of said lug portion and terminating at its free end in an integral cradle portion and spring loops inserted in the apex of each wing portion.

The combination with-the side rail of a bed of a'springsupport detachably mounted thereon and'comprising a box-like spring body member open at its side and at one end, said open end having upturned lugs at (Jopies of this patent may be obtained for its lower edge fitting against the lower edge of the rail, and downturned lugs fitting over the upper end of the rail, locking ears projecting beyondsaid open end of the main body and the locking bolt extending through said ears and confining said clamp in position; and a spring member mounted in said clamp.

8. The combination with a side rail of a bed, of a spring support mounted thereon and comprising a spring clamp fitting said side rail and having opposed lug members abutting against the opposite sides of said side rail, means for adjustably securing the 7 clamp to the side rail, a detachable spring member adjustably mounted in the clamp, and comprising a pair of vertical leg members extending through said clamp, V-shaped wing portions integrally connected with each lug portion, a cradle portion at the I upper end of the wing portions and formed integrally therewith, and spring loops formed at the apex of each wing portion.

4:. The combination with the side rail of a bed, of a spring support detachably clamped thereto comprising a main body member fitting over the side rail of the bed and having clamping ears and a locking bolt extending through said ears and secured thereto, a spring adjustably mounted in said clamp and comprising a pair of vertical leg members, a pair of V-shaped wings integrally connected'to the leg members, coils inserted in each wing, and a closed loop like cradle member at the upper end of said wings and formed integral therewith.
