UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATTACHMENT FOR BEDSTE-ADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed September 22, 1905. Serial No. 279,603.
I 0 (all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANNIE M. MACILWAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorleska, in the county of Trinity and State of California, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bedsteads, and especially to an attachment for an iron bedstead to support a wire or other mattress frame. I
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, practical attachment in lieu of slats and the like for iron or other bedsteads for supporting the frame of a wire or other mattress." v
It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 illustrates the ap lication of same.
My device is preferab y made of cast metal, though it may be forged or otherwise made in any approved manner. As here shown, it comprises a casting having an inverted-U- shaped part A, with its legs adapted to straddle the rail 2 ofa metal bedstead. One of these arms, preferably the inside one, carries a set-screw 3, loosely sliding in a perforation in said arm and provided with a nut 4, bearing on the inside of the arm. By' holding the nut and turning the screw the device may be clamped to the rail in a fixed position.
Formed integral or otherwise secured to the clamp member A is a U-shaped part B,
with its arms opening upward and spread out sufiicientlv to receive and support a rail As the mattressframe usually sits inside of the rails of a bed stead, the upper mattress-supporting part B of the casting is suitably ofiset from the lower clamp portion A so as to reach in far enough beyond the rails to receive the mattressframe. Four of these attachments comprise a set. They may be. of any suitable or desired shape or design and may have any desired form of ornamentation. These devices are very simple, are cheap to manufacture, may be quickly applied, occupy very little room, and take the place of slats and like cumbersome dust-collecting means now generally employed to support the mattressframe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the side rail of a bedstead, of a single rigid casting comprising a substantially T-shaped member laid crosswise of the rail with cross-arms of the T standing vertical and one of said arms abut ting against the rail to form one member ofa clamp and the other arm projecting upward to support the outer edge of the side rail of a mattress-frame, the inner end of said castinghaving an upward projection to support the inner edge of the side rail of the mattressframe, and the under side of the horizontal part of the casting having a downwardly-extending projection contiguous to the side rail of the bedstead, said last-named projection carrying a clamp-screw to engage the side rail of the bedstead; the arrangement of said cross arms and several projections being such that the weight of the mattress may be supported directly on top of the side rail of the bedstead and so relieve the clamp-screw of twisting strain and prevent the casting from turning.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANNIE M. MAGILWAINE.
