Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 18, 190E To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, \VILLIAM M. Law- YER and JAMES P. LAWYER, citizens of the United States, residing at Guernsey, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crib Structures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cribs, and more particularly to a crib which may be attached to the side of a bed of the usual type, and has for its object to provide a crib of this type which will be simple in arrangement and structure, and which may thus be manufactured at a low figure, and which will be furthermore such that, when it is not in use, it may be folded to lie upon the bed to which it is attached and thus out of the way of persons occupying the room in which it is located.

Another object is to provide a structure which will be adjustable to suit beds of different heights.

In the drawings forminga portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bed to which the present crib is attached, the latter being in operative position, Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 showing the crib folded to lie upon the bed, Fig. is a reduced end view, partly in sec tion, showing the crib in operative position, Fig. t is a detail sectional view through one of the attaching clamps.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a bed 5, having the usual side rail 6. Engaged with the side rail 6 there are a pair of clamps 7, each having a vertical passage 8 formed therethrough. Engaged in each of these passages 8 there is an upwardly extending supporting member 9, and set screws are engaged in the clamps 7, indicated at 10 for operation to impinge against the vertically extending members 9 to hold them at different points in their movement through the clamps.

The upwardly extending members 9 are provided with horizontal alining openings 11 in their upper ends, and engaged in these openings, there is the inner side rod 12 of a rectangular bed frame 13. This bed frame also includes end rods 14, which are connected at their inner ends with the member 12 and which have their outer ends turned upwardly and outwardly as shown at 13.

Engaged in the upwardly and outwardly turned end portions 13 of the rods 14, there is the outer horizontally extending side rod 15 of the frame, upon which there is mounted a side 16 for the crib. This side consists of a metallic bar bent into yoke shape and including a horizontal top por tion 17, and depending end portions 18. These end portions 18 have alining openings 19 formed therethrough adjacent to their centers, receiving the outer side rod 15 of the bed frame, so that the side 16 is movable pivotally upon the rod 15.

The end portions 18 of the side 16 extend below the rod 15 to form legs, as shown, and are hollow as indicated at 20, and receive adjustable rods 21 having feet 22 at their lower ends, and set screws are engaged in the end portions 18, these set screws being indi cated at 23 for operation to hold the rods 21. at different points in their movement. When the bed frame is in operative position, there fore, its height may be varied as desired, by adjusting the members 9 and the rods 21.

Normally vertical ends 24. are provided and consist of bars bent into yoke shape similarly to the side 16. The yokes of the ends 24 each include an upper horizontal portion 25, and depending end portions 26 which have passages in their lower ends receiving the end rods let of the bed frame therewithin for pivotal movement of the ends 2% thereupon.

From the foregoing, it will be understood that the ends 24 may be folded inwardly and downwardly upon the bed, and that the side 16 may then be folded downwardly and inwardly upon the ends 24, the side 16 being brought into a plane above the ends where folded by reason of the upwardly directed end portion 13 of the end rod 14 of the bed frame. After the ends and side have been thus folded, the frame itself is swung over upon the pivotal connection of the member 12 with the vertically extending members 9, to bring the bed frame and folded portion upon the bed 5, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will of course be understood that in the drawings, the spring or mattress which, in use, is positioned within the bed frame, is omitted to more clearly disclose the parts.

, Suitable latches 28 are provided to hold the combined side and leg member 16 and the vertically extending end members 24 in operative position. As shown, the downwardly extending leg portions of the member 16 are connected by a horizontally extending rod A, and pivotally engaged upon the inner side member 12, there is a rod B, extending downwardly and outwardly, and having a fork C at its free end which engages over the rod A. This rod B thus acts as a lock member to hold the crib in operative position, and may be raised when the crib is to be folded as will be understood. It will of course be understood that the rods A and B may be omitted if desired.

The peculiar structure of the clamps 7 is illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing. Each of these clamps has the vertically extending transverse slot Z which engages over the side rail of the bed, and has the vertical passage 8 previously described. The vertical passage 8, as shown, communicates at its lower portion with the slotso that the vertically extending member 9, in each instance, is free to move to a certain extent into the slot Z.

The set screw 10 is engaged in the clamps T at the opposite side of the passage 8 from the slot Z, and is so arranged, that, when the set screw screwed in to engage the vertically extending member 9, this member is moved toward and into the slot Z and is clamped against the side rail 6 of the bed. By the single set screw, therefore, the clamp is held to the bed and the vertically extending member 9 is held in proper position.

A crib extension for beds comprising attaching members, vertically extending members adjustably connected with the attaching members, a normally horizontal frame pivotally connected with the vertieally extending members for movement to extend horizontally at either side of said vertically extending members, supports for the frame, and side and end members for the crib connected with the frame for movement into and out of operative position.

A crib extension for beds comprising attaching members, a normally horizontal frame pivotally connected with the attaching members, said frame including inner and outer side rods and connecting end rods, a side pivotally mounted upon the said outer side rod, legs formed integrally with the side and extending downwardly beyond the frame when the latter is in horizontal position, a rod connecting the lower ends of the legs, a rod pivoted upon the inner side rod of the frame and having a forked end removably engaged with the connecting rod of the legs, and ends pivoted upon the end rods of the frame for movement toextend at times vertically and at times horizontally, said frame being shiftable upon its connections with the attaching means to extend horizontally at either side of said attaching members.

3. A crib extension for beds comprising attaching members, rods vertically adjustable in said attaching members, a normally horizontal frame including longitudinal side rods and connecting end rods disposed with its inner side rod pivotally engaged in the vertically adjustable rods, a side pivotally mounted upon the outer side rod of the frame, integral downwardly extending legs carried by the side, said side being movable to extend at times vertically and at times horizontally, and ends pivoted upon the end. rods of the frame for movement to extend at times verticall 1 and at times horizontally, said frame with its side and ends being shiftable upon its pivotal connections with the vertically adjustable rod to extend at either side of said rod.
