LOOK FOR PRINTERS GALLEYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed May 8, 1907. Serial No. 372,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Printers Galleys, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is the production of a side stick having combined therewith a foot stick adjustable longitudinally and transversely of the side stick.
Another object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of devices of the class mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a printers galley containing type securely held in the galley by means of acombination side stick and foot stick embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmental perspective view of said combined side stick and foot stick. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the connec tion between the side stick and the foot stick. 4
In Fig. 1, A indicates a printers galley of common form, and B, a quantity of type locked therein by a device embodying my invention.
The embodiment herein shown of my invention comprises a side stick 1 and a foot stick 2 adjustably secured together, the foot stick being capable of movement longitudinally and transversely of the side stick in order to hold any desired quantity of type in place in the galley. The side stick 1 and the foot stick 2 are preferably formed of metal, and as herein shown each consists of two bars 3 and 4 of suitable length, and preferably square in cross-section. The bars 3 and 4 are secured together in parallel relation and slightly spaced apart by means of spacer blocks 5 lying between the ends of said bars, and rivets 6 extending through said bars and and said spacer blocks. This construction provides an open space or slot 7 in the side stick 1 and a similar space 8 in the foot stick 2. The foot stick is attached to the side stick so as to extend substantially at right angles thereto, and preferably overlies the side stick. One end of the foot stick 2 is provided with a member adapted to support said end above the base of the galley at a height substantially equal to the thickness of the side stick 1. Said member may consist of an angle piece 9.
The means herein shown for securing the side stick 1 and the foot stick 2 together comprises a pin 10 which is square in cross-section throughout the greater portion of its length, the square portion of said pin extending through the elongated openings 7 and 8. Upon its lower end is fixed in any suitable manner a member adapted to underlie the side stick, which member may consist of a plate 11 having an opening therein through which the reduced lower end of the pin 10 extends, said reduced lower end being riveted to hold the plate in place. At two opposite side edges of the plate 11 are flanges 12 lying at opposite sides of the side stick 1 to prevent the bars 3 and 4 from spreading when the clamping means to be presently described is operated.
The upper end of the pin 10 is screwthreaded to receive a clamping nut 13, a washer 14 being placed beneath said nut, said washer bearing upon the foot stick 2. Upon one side of the side stick 1 is preferably provided means for clamping the side stick in place, Which means is herein shown as comprising screw-threaded studs 15 fixed in the bar 4 of said side stick. Upon said screw-threaded studs are turned nuts 16 between which and the adjacent side of the galley are placed slugs or furniture 17.
In use, the type to be locked in the galley is placed in one corner thereof, the side stick 1 placed against the longer side of the body of type, and the foot stick 2 placed against the shorter side or end thereof. Furniture 1.7 is then placed between the side stick and the adjacent side of the galley, and one or more of the nuts 16 turned to clamp the side stick against the type. The nut 13 is then rotated to clamp the foot stick to the side stick. The body of type is now firmly locked against movement in the galley.
It is evident that various changes may be made in the embodiment herein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, therefore no undue limitation should be understood from the foregoing detailed description.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a lock for printers galleys, in combination, a'stick comprising two bars held together in spaced alinement; a cooperating stick; and means for securing said sticks together, including means for preventing distortion of the first mentioned stick.
2. In a lock for printers galleys, in combination, a side stick and a foot stick each provided with an elongated opening therein; a pin extending through said openings; a member fixed to one end of said pin means on said member for preventing distortion of said side stick, one end of said pin being screw-threaded; and a clamping nut turned upon the screw-threaded end of said pin.
3. In a lock for printers galleys, in combination, a side stick; a foot stick slidable upon said side stick and so as to be relatively longitudinally and transversely adjustable; means for adjustably securing said side stick and said foot stick together; and a downwardly extending lug 011 one end of said foot stick, equal in length to the thickness of the side stick.
4. In a lock for printers galleys, in combination, a side stick and a foot stick, each 20 nut turned upon the screw-threaded end of 25 said pin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE R. BOYTE.
itnesses 0. PAUL PARKER, GEORGE L. CHINDAHL.
