CL1 P Filed Sept. 2, 1955 INVENOR. Moses C. E ouszeems United States Patent CLIP Moses C. Bourgeois, Sidney, N. Y.
Application September 2, 1955, Serial No. 532,232
4 Claims. (Cl. 24-66) This invention relates to an improved adjustable clip for holding together a plurality of sheets of paper, laminations of wood or the like. The primary object of the present invention is to provide a more efiicient and serviceable clip et the type indicated above which is of highly simplified, low cost construction.
Other important objects are to provide a clip of the character indicated composed of two sections which can be separated by light pressure exerted With the fingers, so that the sections fall away from one another and from a previously clipped object, whose grip on said object is of great strength in relation to the size, lightness and low cost of the clip; facilitates adjustment of the clip to a desired size; and efiect a strong but readily separab1e connection oJ the sections of the clip when the same is in use.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clip according to the present invention, applied to a stack of papers, said stack being shown fragmentarily;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view on line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the clip sections separated.
The illustrated clip, shown applied to a stack 12 of papers, comprises two sections and 11.
The clip section 10, formed from a single wide, elongated piece of fiat spring material, such as metal or plastic, includes a jaw 14 having in its untensioned condition a longitudinal curvature extending for its full length except for an outwar-dly bent lip 15 at its free end. At its inner end the jaw 14 merges into an elongated leg 16 bent to provide uniformly longitudinally spaced, steeply ralzed teeth 13 each extending the full width of the leg 16 (Figure 1). Each tooth has an elongated, sloping portion 19 and a short portion 21 disposed at an acnte angle to the portion 19, both portions lying in planes oblique to the plane of the leg 16.
The section 11 is formed substantially identically but oppositely to section 10 and includes a longitudinally curved jaw merging into a leg 22 having teeth 24 complementary t0 teeth 18.
In use, the legs are in overlapped relation with their teeth interengaged (Figures 1 and 2). Selected obliquely pitched short portions 21 are engaged With each other so as to preclude longitudinal movement of the legs relative to each other. The legs cooperate to define a bight portion of the clip, and the length of the bight portion is adjustable according to the thickness of the stack of papers 12, the length selected being such that the jaws 14 and 2t3 are fiattened and tensioned toward the op posite sides of an object disposed therebetween so as to exert a strong clamping action on the gripped object,
2 whether a sheaf of papers, laminations of wood being glued together, or other superposed, sheetlike objects.
T0 remove the clip, inward pressure is exerted against the outer sides of the jaws while at the same time a light outward pull is exerted on the free end 25 of the leg 16. This disengages the clamp sections from each other and from the gripped article.
As shown in Figure 2, the free end. 26 of the leg :of the section 11 eau bear against the adjacent edge of the stack 12 of paper or the like in a manner to maintain and enhance the interengagement of the teeth of the clip sections.
The clip, as will be apparent, can be made in various sizes and of any desired gauge. It can be stamped out cheaply in quantity on automatic presses and no assembly of the two components is necessary When the clip is manufactured or sold. Apart from these desirable features, the clip is characterized by its case and swiftmess of application and removal, and by its strong grip npon the held objects.
It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted Within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. in a clip, a pair of sections each comprising a longitudinally bowed jaw having a free end and another end, an elongated spring leg secured at one end to said other end of each jaw at an angle to the jaw, the legs of the sections having a free end, said legs being in overlapping relation to each other and having facing sides, longitudinally spaced teeth on each of said facing sides, the teeth on one leg being oppositely angulated relative to the teeth on the other leg, selected teeth on the two legs being interengaged.
2. In a clip, a pair of sections each. comprising a jaw having a free end and another end, an elongated spring leg fixed at one end to said other end of the jaw at an angle to the jaw and another end which is free, said leg being detormed between the ends to provide teeth therealong, each tooth comprising an elongated portion angulated away from the plane of the leg in a direction toward the free end of the leg and a shorter portion at one end of the elongated portion and angulated relative to the elongated portion and relative to the plane of the leg, the sections being reversed with respect to each other With the legs of the sections in overlapping relation to each other, and With shorter portions of the teeth of one leg interengaging short portions of teeth of the other leg.
3. In a clip, a pair et sections each comprising a jaw having a free end and another end, an elongated spring leg fixed at one end to said other end of the jaw at an angle to the jaw and another end which is free, said leg being deformed between the ends to provide teeth therealong, each tooth comprising an elongated portion angulated away from the plane of the leg in a direction toward the free end of the leg and a shorter portion at one end of the elongated portion and angulated relative to the elongated portion and relative to the plane of the leg, the sections being reversed With respect to each other With the legs of the sections in overlapping relation to each other, and With shorter portions of the teeth of one leg interengaging short portions oi teeth of the other leg, and with long portions of teeth of one leg engaging longportions of teeth of the other leg.
4. -A clip comprising two similar sections each con sisting of an elongated spring strip constitnting a 1eg having a free end and another and, said legs being substantially coextensive with each other and in longitudinally overlapped and reversed relation to each other, latral jaws on said other ends of the legs and -opposed to each other for gripping an article betweenthe jaws, said legs being deformed 'to define teeth extending thereal0ng, said teeth consisting of rlatively long portions angled laterally out of the longitudinal planes of the legs, said long portions having inner 'ends in the planes of the legs and outer ends spaced laterally outwardly frofn the planes ofthe legs, said teethfurther consisting of shortr portions having outer ends joined to enter ends of long portions and inner ends joined to inner ends of long portions, said shorter portions being more acutely angulated relative to the planes of the legs than the'long portion, the teeth of one -of the legs being longitudinlly ieversed with respect to the teeth of the other leg, with the shorterportons of related teeth of the legs intenengaged and with the long portions -of the saine 'teethin contact With each other, whereby the legs lle separably connectedto each other, the legs bcng other wise unconnected With each other.
