Application filed September 30, A1953i. j Serial No. 223,091.
The present invention relates to improvements in clampsand has reference more par-' Vticularly to a device ttor association with a mattress and the bed clothing placed thereover for the purpose ot securing the bed clothingto the mattress whereby to prevent the displacement of the bed clothing. l' One of the importantobjects ot the'present invention is to provide a bed clothes clamp which includes a pair ot complementary clamping sections adapted tor adjustment `in order to'properly position the clamp over the edge 'ot the mattress and the vbed clothing7 means being associated with the complementary' clamping sections forlocking the same in any adjusted position against outward movement.
'A still further object is to provide a bed clothes clamp of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. v
Other objects and advantages of the inventionV will become apparent from the following description when t'aken'in vconnection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanyingv drawing forming part ot this application and in which like numerals indicate like parts: v f V- Figure l is a side elevation of one form of the bed clothes clamp showing the same in use. v
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the `bed.
clothes clamp for disclosing more clearly the locking means.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on thei Vline 3-3 ot Figure 2 showing the manner in which the clamp retains the bed clothes on the mattress. Y y
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure showing a modified torni of the clamp.
In the drawing wherein Jfor the purpose ot illustration is shown the preferred embodiment ot my invention with reference more particularly to Figures l to 47 inclusive, the numeral l designates generally my improved bed clothes clamp, the same comprising a pair ot complementary clamping sections designated by the numerals 2 and 3, respectively.
Each section includes a substantially rectangular reinforced sheet metal plate, the
inner opposed ends of these plates being dis? posed in overlapping relation and as is clearly illustratedin Figure 3, the upperedge portion oit the plate-like section 2 is formed with a downwardly curved jaw 4 while the other plate-like section 3 .is formed. at its lower or outerv end with the upwardly curved jaw 5. rlhe tree edges of these jaws are preferably PATENT ortica. y
rolled over, beaded or bent back .upon them Y ing or otherwise de'facing'the vbed clothing.
Formed at the side edges of" the outer plate like section 2 are inwardly extending longitudinal ribs 6 between which is slidable the .inner plate section 3 in themanner vas vclearly illustratedin Figures 2 and. 4. For the pur# pose of preventing lateraljmovement of the plate-like sections with respect to each other, the outer plate-like section? 2 is vfurther,
formed with'the laterally extending ears 7 Vwhich extend inwardly from the lower ends of the guide ribs 6 as indicated in Figures 2 and 4, and these ears will engage the inner tace off the inner plate-like section 3.
The outer plate-like section 2 is vi'orined` formed with the ratchet teeth 9 ask clearly shown inpFigurez2.
Projecting outwardly from the innerplatelike section 3 adjacent the upperedge thereof and adapted tor. disposition. throughV the longitudinal slot formed in the outer plate like section is the pin 10. A lever'll is pivoted on this pin and is disposed on the outside of the outer plate-like section 2. The free end of this lever is formed with a laterallyl extending thumb engaging portion l2, while selves to prevent the edges oit the jaws te'arthe pivoted end Vot the lever is so constructed as to provide an inwardly extending pawl 13 which cooperates with the ratchet teeth 9 and is normally held in engagementv with the ratchet teeth by means of the axial coil spring 14 which is associated with the pin 10 an-d the lever 11 in the manner clearly illustrated'in j Figures 2 and 3.
The ratchet teeth 9 are so formed as to permit the downward sliding movement of the outer section 2 so that t-he complementary sections may be brought in tight engagement 45 innerendof the latehfisdisengagedicfmmithe s.v Y
around one edgeof a mattress A `and the adjacent portion of the bed clothing'B. The manner in which theopposed jaws 4 and 5 grip the edge portions ofthe mattress and the adjacent portions of the bed clothing is clearly shown in Figure 3.
, The paWl 13 will cooperate with the ratchet Y teeth in preventing the upward sliding-movement of the outer sectionV Qfwith. respect to the inner section 3 and' whenever it becomes necessary to remove the clamp,4 the finger piece12 is actuated ,soy as toy releasethe -pawl from, engagement with. the ratchet teeth 9 whereby to Apermit the sliding movement of the com lementary platelike sections inopposite irections outwardly, thus enabling the clamp tobe entirely disengaged fromlthe bcdiclotliing andthe mattress. A
InvlFigure 5, of the drawingf have shown a modification of thelockingA means wherein one of theIpIate-like sections is formed Witha Serieslofvertically spaced indenturesindicated' atl 15j These. indentnres are formed ,byr strikingout the tongues lgand `these tongues are disposed inwardly of the platej likel section 17 The` complementary plate ,likesection 18 has' its-intermediate portion f stamped out tofform aihousing. 1 9, and securedfat one end in; the closed end of .the
sectionsinone directionfis preventedz. ilrvvV evier,` bypullmgputwandly on the headQQ,v the indentures, and said plate-like sections are i lfree for slidable movement in either direcy tion.
Itwill thus beseen from the loregoing. scription, that I have. :pnovidedlaf highly novel, yet simple. bed cl'otheselamp which can be readily and easily adjusted andwhich vvill' at all times be positive and eiicient in retaining sheets and other bed clothing on a mattress in proper position, and this Without. tearing or otherwise iufm-ing fthe bed clothing or mattress with 'W lich theY device is to beassociated,
A bed clothesv clam of the above men! tioned character may e manufactured at a very low cost and. due to its-simplicity, vtheV parts can be easilyadjusted.` y e While `I have :s own. the preferred: embodiment of my invention, it isw to be understood thatvarieusjchanges in. the size, shape and n arrangement of parts maybe resorted to Without departing. from` the spirit of the invention and the scope ofA the appended claim. n y v Having thus describedthe inventiomwhat I claim as newand desire to. secure by Letters Patent is n.
