4 Claims. (Cl. 24--81) This invention relates to a clip and more specifically provides a device for retaining clothes or cloth materials in a desired position.
An object of this invention is to provide a clip to specifically hold and fasten baby diapers.
Another object of this invention is to provide a clip for holding cloth material or similar items in position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a clip for the above purposes which is simple in construction, easy to operate, well adapted for its purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially along section line 2-2 of Figure 1 showing details of construction of the clip of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the construction of Figure 1 showing cloth inserted between the jaws of the clip;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal, vertical section taken substantially along section line 44 of Figure 3 showing the details of construction and the relationship of the movable jaws and the stationary jaws;
Figure 5 is a top plan view showing a modified form of the clip of the present invention; and
Figure 6 is an elongated longitudinal vertical section taken substantially along section line 6-6 of Figure 5 showing the details of construction and the relationship of the movable jaws and the stationary jaws in the modified form of the clip.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 10 generally designates the clip of the present invention illustrated in Figures 1-4 and numeral 12 generally designates the clip illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. The clip 10 generally includes an elongated member 14 having return bent end portions 16 forming a jaw 18 in spaced relation to the elongated member 14. An elongated closed slot 20 is provided in the elongated member 14 and one side of the slot 20 is provided with a plurality of notches 22 in communication with one side of the slot 20 and angulated in relation thereto. The notches 22 adjacent one end of the slot 24) are angulated towards the center of the elongated member 14 and the notches at the other end of the slot 20 are angulated in the direction toward the center of the member 14. Slidably mounted on the elongated member 14 is a pair of rectangular ring members 24 provided with a jaw 26 which is parallel to and in opposition to the stationary jaws 18. The members 24 may be moved along the elongated member 14. Pivotally mounted on the rear of each of the slidable members 24 atent O 2,831,228 Patented Apr. 22, 1958 is a pair of plates or links 28 being connected together by a pair of rivets or pins 30 one of which constitutes a keeper pin and pivotally connects the plates 28 to the ring member 24 and the other of which selectively engages the keeper notches 22 for retaining the slidable jaw 24 in adjusted position thereby clamping a cloth 32 between the stationary jaw 18 and the movable jaw 26. The device may be utilized for clamping any cloth article, such as a babys diaper.
In the embodiment as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the clip 12 includes the same structure with the exception that the ring member 34 slidably mounted on the elongated member 14 has a movable jaw 36 which is parallel to but spaced above the stationary jaw 38 which is smooth wherein the cloth 32 is held between the lower side of the jaw 36 and the upper side of the jaw 38. The ring member 34 is provided with a single plate 40 pivotally mounted on a rivet 42 at its rear end and a depending pin 44 engages selective notches 22 in communication with the slot 20 thereby retaining the slidable jaws 34 in adjusted position.
The operation of the devices as illustrated in Figures 1 and Sis substantially the same wherein the movable jaws 26 and 36 are moved toward the stationary jaws 18 and 38 thereby clamping the cloth 32 therebetween. The jaws of Figure l are in parallel relation and opposed to each other in longitudinal alignment while the jaws of the device of Figure 5 are parallel to each other and opposed in longitudinal disalignment. The device may be constructed of any suitable material utilized in articles of this type and the clip may be used for holding cloth material or other material wherever it is desired. In practical operation the device is especially useful in fastening baby diapers as there are no sharp points to injure the child.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A fastener comprising a rigid elongated body member having a hook-shaped return bend at at least one of its ends, a terminal end of said return bend underlying and being disposed in spaced parallelism relative to an adjacent end portion of the body member and constituting a stationary jaw, said body member being provided centrally with a lengthwise slot which is closed at its respective ends, one lengthwise edge portion of said slot having laterally disposed keeper notches, said keeper notches being in communication with the slot and located adjacent to said stationary jaw, an endless loop-like ring member completely encircling and slidably mounted on said body member and bodily shiftable toward and from said stationary jaw and having a portion cooperating with the latter in defining and providing a relatively movable cloth gripping and clamping jaw, a flat link parallel -to the body member and having one end superimposed upon said ring and pivotally connected to said ring by a hinge pin, said link bridging said slot and being provided at its opposite end with a lateral pin constituting a keeper-pin, said keeper-pin being selectively and releasably engageable with one of said keeper notches.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 and wherein a portion of the ring member is immediately and substantially opposed to and movable toward and from said stationary jaw and is coplanar with said stationary jaw and is provided, as is the stationary jaw, with cooperating material gripping teeth.
3. The structure defined in claim 1 and wherein a portion of the ring member immediately underlies said body member and is substantially opposed to and is movable toward and from said stationary jaw and is in a plane which is distinguishable from and above a plane of the stationary jaw and is coplanar with a space existing between the body member and stationary jaw and is therefore optionally movable into and out of said space.
4. A fastener comprising a rigid elongated flat faced body member having return bends at its opposite ends, a terminal end of each return bend underlying and being disposed in spaced parallelism relative to a cooperating underneath side of said body member and constituting a stationary jaw, a portion of the body member between the respective stationary jaws being provided with a lengthwise centrally disposed slot and said slot being closed at its respective outer ends and the closed ends being situated inwardly of the respective stationary jaws, one lengthwise edge portion of said slot being provided adjacent opposite end portions of the slot with laterally disposed keeper notches, said keeper notches being in communication with the slot and located adjacent their 4 respective stationary jaws, an endless loop-like ring member completely encircling and slidably mounted on said body member at each end portion of the body member and bodily shiftable toward and from its cooperating stationary jaw and having a portion which is opposed to, coplanar with and is movable toward and from a stationary jaw and provides a relatively movable gripping and clamping jaw, a pair of spaced parallel substantially flat links having corresponding end portions hingedly I connected to a cooperating portion of an adjacent ring References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,684,443 Harris Sept. 18, 1928 1,854,671 Roberts Apr. 19, 1932 2,046,488 Roth July 7, 1936 2,219,392 Iorgensen Oct. 29, 1940 2,619,138 Marler Nov. 25, 1952
