firmly clamp one end of the leaves'to hold them against a backing. firmly while in use. The primaryobject of the invention is to provide a clamp of a peculiar design which is provided with a serrated gripping means having associated therewith end supports which form guides between which the end of the pad isadapted to rest and these supports hold .the serrated edge of the clamp from engaging against the backing.
A clamp of this nat-ureis desirable in holding a series of restaurant checks or tickets which are usually boundtogether in a pad. It is desirable that the clamp be provided with means for holdingthe pad against transverse movement in the clamp or as it is being placed in the clamp, and this invention includes side members which are associated with the jaw of the clamp adapted to form such means for holding the pad in place against transverse movement even before the jaw of the clamp has come into rigid engagement with the pad.
It is also an object of the invention to hold the clamping jaw with its serrated edge out of engagement with the other member of the clamp so that it can be easily engaged by the finger and raised against the coil spring, which holds it in clamping position when it is desired to insert a pad. The side brackets or guide members formed on the clamp jaw operate to hold the jaw in partially open position.
In the drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a plan view of the clamp illustrating a portion of the backing and a pad held therein.
Figure 2 is a central sectional View in enlarged form of the clamp holding a pad only a portion of which is illustrated.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the jaw of the clamp in open position.
Figure 4 is a similar cross section to Figure 2 with the pad removed illustrating the gagement with the back C of the same.
edge of the clamp held away from the backing.
Figure 5 is a back view of the clamp in enlarged 'form.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Figure 2 illustrating the clamp with a pad therein, a portion of the pad being broken away.
The drawings illustrate the clamp A which is provided with a gripping jaw B of an angular form having a back 10 which is provided with cars; 11 adapted -to engage the pintle 12 to hingedly secure the jaw B to the backing C or the under-portion of the clamp.- v j The jaw B is provided with aforwardly projecting portion 13 which extends at'approximately right angles to the back 10 and the gripping edge of which is serrated at 14 to provide teeth for engaging a pad of is adapted to be held firmly sheets D which in the clamp.
Formed integral with and extending downward from each end of the back 10 and top-'13 of the clamp B are brackets or guide members 15.
The guide members 15 form spacing means or stops between which the pad D is held against transverse movement in the clamp. These guides 15 allow the end of the pad to be clamped to be readily inserted and properly positioned beneath the gripping edges 14 of the jaw B. The guides 15 also function to form supporting brackets for holding the jaw B in partially open position with the serrated edge 14 out of en- A suitable coil spring 16 is positioned centrally on the pintle 12 with one end engaging the back 10 and the other held in backing C so as to cause the jaw of the clamp to be forced towards the back O and to hold the shoulder or guides 15 with the edge 17 of the same into engagement with the back O when the clamp is empty.
A central portion of the gripping edge of the jaw B is formed with a smooth recessed edge 18. This recess 18 forms a finger engagement so that when the clamp is empty and the guides or ends 15 are in the position illustrated in Figure 4 the jaw B is held so i I that the finger can be inserted in the opening 18 and the jaw lifted against the spring 16 to open the clamp to receive a pad.
The formation of the jaw B is of a simple nature, inexpensive to manufacture and as the ends or spacing guides 15 are integral with the top and back sides 13 and respectively the jaw can 'be readily formed by a die from a piece of sheet material. At
no time will the serrated portions 14 engage against the back or side 0 of the clamp, but
' the fact that they are held away from'the same by the supports o-r sides 15 allows the easy engagement of the notch portion 18 so as to raise the body B into the position illustrated in Figure 3 readily to receive the pad D.
1. A clamp including a back, a jaw mem ber hingedly connected to said back, resilient means for forcing said jaw membervtoward said back and stops formed on the ends of said jaw member and adapted to engage said back for limiting the movement thereof 2. A clamp including a back, a jaw member hingedly connected to said back, resilient means for forcing saidjawmember toward said back and ears turned over from the body of the metal forming said jaw member to end members being adapted to form means for holding the biting edge of the jaw away from the back member whereby the clamp can be readily opened and a pad easily inserted Within the same.
4. A device of the class described including a biting jaw hingedly secured to a back member, spring means for pressing said jaw towards said back member, a biting edge formed on said jaw, and end members extending from said jaw adapted to space said biting edge away from said back member when said jaw is empty.
5. A clamp comprising a back, a jaw member pivoted thereto near an edge of said back, said jaw memberincluding an upstand ing portion, an angular portion issuing 'out-.
wardly from said upstanding portion running substantially parallel with said back and a biting edge formed along, the outer edge of said angular portion and resilient means for forcing said angular portion toward said back and stops formed on the ends of said jaw adapted to engage said back to terminate the movement of said jaw toward the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
