Patented May 21, 1940 UNITED STAT-ES IPIIATENT OFFICE John D. Robilotto, New York, N. Y.
Application June ll, 1939, Serial No."279,621
5 Claims. ('01. 281-44) I My inventionjrelates to an improvement in holders for memorandum pads and particularly for a holder and means for securing it in a convenient location to the operator, and has among its purposes and objects to provide:
A, holder for memorandum pads, pencil, and loose leaves, and means of securing the holder to l the steering post or dash of vehicles.
A holder yieldingly securing the pad in it so that it will not move by vibration.
A means of quickly inserting and removing the pad into and-from its holder.
.A holder having a loose leaf securing means and a quickly removable pad and pencil.
A convenient holder for pads, pencil, and loose leaves.
A simple, inexpensive holder.
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the application of my device.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing and in the specifications to follow,
I sketches, etc., may be seen or penciled without delay or moving from the operator's position or seat, or while operating the machine.
For the purpose of illustration, I have shown and described in detail one construction of my device which may be modified to suit the numerous applications to which it is adapted with-' out departing from its underlying principles as may be apparent to one skilled in the art to which it pertains after a study of this disclosure.
My device comprises the pad holder I open 'at the end 2 to receive the memorandum pad 3. The back 4 of the holder is substantially flat, thereby providing a backing for the pad for writing notes, etc., while the pad is held within the holder. The back is preferably cut away at 5 to facilitate the easy removal of the pad which is prevented from accidental movement or 'removal.by the spring 6 which is secured to the inside surface of the flanges over top edge I and rests against the top leaf of the pad regardless of the number of leaves or thickness of the pad. The end edge 8 andbottom edge 9 are likewise flanged over to assist in holding the pad in place.
The flange edges 1, 8, and 9, are preferably constructed by bending the back upwardly and then over the front to form the flanges. The bottom flange q is preferably provided with an extension table l0 on the same plane as its face, and has secured to its face the spring clip II for holding detached leaves, sheets of paper, maps, etc., l2 which maybe easily inserted by depressing the handle l3 of the clip in the usual manner; the paper being held in the clip by the torsion spring l4 held between the ears 15 of the movable part of the clip around the pivot pin I6 which passes through said ears and the upward extended ears I! of the table I 0.
I have provided the yielding depending bosses I8 at each side of and under the table III which engage the pencil l9 on one side, forcing the other side of the pencil against the under sur- Near the end 2| of the back 4 of the holder,
'1 have provided the depression 22 having the apertures 23 which receive the screws 24 which engage the apertured end 25 of the clamp26 which engages the steering post or other similar object 27 and is detachably secured thereto by the screw 28.
The clamp 26 is so formed as to pass around the steering post and may be formed integral with the apertured end 25. a
When it is not desired to'secure the holder' to the steering post, etc., the clamp is not used,
and I have provided the angularly disposed boss 29 which is preferably formed integral with the back 4 and is providedwith the apertures 30 which receive the'screws 3| which may engage apertures in the dash or other relatively flat surface 32.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown th holder I in full lines as secured to the steering post ll of the automobile 33 and in broken lines, I have shown the position the holder may be placed on the dash.
My holder may be modified to suit its securement to other types of vehicles and to the parts of machines, etc. I do not wish to be limited to the single construction and application herein shown and described for the purpose of illustration as I may wish to depart therefrom within the scope of the appended claims which set forth my invention.
I claim:
1. In a holder having a substantially flat back table and fastener secured to said holder secured to and on a plane with the lower flanged over edge of said holder and yielding bosses below said table for a pencil adapted to force and hold said pencil against the under surface of said table.
2. In a holder having a substantially flat back and top, end and bottom edges bent upwardly and flanged over, a pad and spring means resisting movement of said pad-from said holder and a table and fastener secured to said holder said table having an upper surface on a plane with the lower of said flanged over edges and yielding bosses at the sides of said table secured to the lower upwardly bent flange and forcing a pencil or like object'against the under surface of said table. i
3. In a memorandum pad and holder, a writing pad securing means having a substantially flat surface for writing and the free removalof thepadandanangularlydisposedbossaperture for screws adapted to secure said holder to, and at an angle to, the dash of a vehicle.
4. In a memorandum pad and holder, a writing pad securing means having a substantially flat surface for writing and the free removal of the pad and an angularly disposed boss aperture for screws adapted to secure said holder to, and at an angle to. the dash of a vehicle, said flat surface cutout to form said boss and to provide access to said screws. 1
5; In a holder having a substantially flat back and top, end and bottom edges bent upwardly and flanged over, a pad and spring means resisting movement of said pad from said holder,
and securing means comprising an angularly disposed apertured boss cut out of said back and formed integral with one of said upwardly bent edges for detachably securing said holder to substantially flat surfaces.
JOHN D. ROBILO'I'IO.
