1 Claim. (Cl. 129-23) My invention relates to loose leaf binders and is directed particularly to improvements in binders of the type having a flat back board without a cover.

The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved loose leaf binder of the above nature capable of quick, easy, neat and compact filing of papers having a wide variety of shapes and sizes, such, for example, as

bills, cards, letters, plans, newspaper and magazine clippings, records, sketches, statements, notes, receipts, etc.

Another object is to provide a binder of the character described wherein removal of any paper can be quickly and easily effected without disturbance of any of the other filed sheets and with minimal damage to the sheet being removed simply by tearing out.

Still another object is to provide a loose leaf binder wherein quick and convenient access to any individual paper filed can be had for reading or reference without scattering, loss or disarrangingof any other of the filed sheets.

Still another object is to provide a loose leaf binder of the character described which holds a large number of papers in relation to the thickness of the binder.

Yet another object is to provide a loose leaf binder of the above nature which embodies means for grasping the binder and sliding it toward or away from the user, which means in addition serves as a holder for a pencil or pen when the binder is hung in vertical position against a wall, for example.

A further object is to provide a loose leaf binder of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and long wearing in use.

Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

Fig. 2 is a partial vertical cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, taken along the line 2-2 thereof in the direction of the arrows and illustrating the formation of the binder grasping and pencil holding device;

Fig. 3 is a partial vertical cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, taken along the line 33 thereof in the direction of the arrows, illustrating details of the paper punching and guide mechanism;

Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical cross-sectional view taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows, illustrating the operation of the punching device in filing a sheet of paper; and

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the upper portion of the binder.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the loose leaf binder embodying the invention comprises a flat, rectangular base plate which may be of sheet aluminum, for example, and which preferably is about 8 /2 by 11 inches in size, the size of a standard sheet of typewriter paper. A pair of closely-shaped paper punching posts 11, 12 are fixed to and extend upwardly from the base plate 10. The posts 11, 12 are arranged near the upper end of the base plate 10 and are preferably equidistantly spaced laterally from the longitudinal center of said base plate. The upper ends of the posts 11, 12 are pointed for punching the papers to be filed in the manner hereinbelow described.

Integrally formed with the base plate 10 and bent upwardly therefrom at its upper end is a filing and paper punching guide member 13. The guide member 13 is arranged in spaced parallel position between the two posts 11, 12 and the upper edge ,of the base plate 10, and has vertical side edges 14, 15 which extend outwardly somewhat beyond said posts. The side edges 14, 15 of the guide member also extend upwardly beyond the pointed ends of the posts 11, 12, as best illustrated in Fig. 4. The central, upper end of the guide member 13 is integrally formed with a concave lip member 16 which, as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, extends inwardly between the upper pointed ends of the posts 11, 12 and which curves from zones 17, 18 at each side of said lip member above the upper ends of said posts, to a central zone 19 below the upper ends of said posts. The outer end of the lip member 16 is rounded, as indicated at 19a.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower edge of the base plate 10 is provided with an integrally-formed, rounded grasping end portion 20 which, as best seen in Fig. 2, is formed by bending the lower edge upwardly and around upon itself as at 21, and then in a small reversely-curved portion 22 where it abuts the face of said base plate to form a concave recess. The grasping end portion 20 not only serves as a smooth grasping member for moving the binder to or away from the user, but additionally serves to strengthen the base plate 10,

and as a receptacle for holding a pen or pencil P when w the binder is hung against a wall by means of a pair of openings 23, 24 provided in the top of said base plate above the guide member 13 and spaced at each side thereof.

In use the sheet S of paper to be filed will be curved beneath the lip member 16 and moved against the back surface of the guide member 13, as illustrated in Fig. 4,

is given by way of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the particular disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A loose leaf binder comprising, in combination, a rectangular back plate of thin metal stock, a pair of straight pointed posts fixed at right angles to said backplate near one edge thereof and lying in a plane parallel with said one edge, and means integrally formed with said back plate for guiding paper to be pierced on said posts for [filing on the binder, said paper guiding means comprising an upstanding portion bent of said metal stock into spaced parallel disposition between said one end 0i said back plate and the common plane of said posts, said paper guiding means further comprising a transversely arcuate lip member tbent from said upstanding portion and extending horizontally between said posts and having side portions located between and above saidposts and a central portion centrally-located between and below the pointed ends of said posts.
