Coley, Mntg0rnery, W. Va. Application January 6, 1948, Serial No. 690
2 Claims. (Cl. 206-38) This invention relates to a card filing means for keys.
'An object of this invention is to provide a filing card for keys which is provided with one or more pockets within which a key or keys are adapted to be disposed so that the card may be disposed in the conventional filing cabinet or drawer.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved key filing device which includes means whereby the key or keys will be securely locked in the pocket or pockets formed in the card.
A further object of this invention is to provide a card of this kind which may be made either out of fibrous material such as cardboard or the like, plastic or metal, which is formed with one or more key pockets together with a pocket for receiving an identification card to identify the holder of the key.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank card constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a detailed front elevation of the device partly broken away,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a filing drawer having key holding cards constructed according to this invention, mounted therein, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals I0 and II designate generally a pair of integral sheet members in substantially polygonal configuration which are connected together at their abutting lower edges and are adapted to be bent upwardly along the dotted line I2 so that the two members I0 and II will be disposed in parallel relation.
The sheet member I0 comprises the front wall of a file card or packet forming member and the wall I0 is formed with a pair of contacts I3 and I4 adjacent the opposite ends thereof and in the upper edge of the wall Ill.
The wall It is also formed with a central elongated contact I5 which forms a window and an entrance mouth for a name card I6. When the two wall members Itand II are disposed in parallel relation being bent upwardly along the line I2, these walls are secured together by suitable means such as adhesive or the like and preferably a pair of elongated narrow strips I I and I8 are interposed between the wall members III and I I so as to thereby form a central identification card pocket I9 within which the card I 6 is adapted to be removably mounted.
At the outer ends, the two wall members I0 and II are also secured together by adhesive or other suitable fastening means, and outer strips l9 and 2B are interposed between the wall members I 0 and I I so as to thereby form a pair of key pockets 2| and 22.
The head 23 of a key is adapted to engage in the contact, I3 of the wall I0 and a lining contact 24 which is formed in the wall II. The wall I I is also formed with a second contact 25 aligning with the contact I4 for receiving the head of the second key.
The shank or body portion 26 of the key is adapted to be extended into the key pocket and the walls of the key pocket are spaced apart a distance such that the shank 26 of the key will be firmly and frictionally held therein.
In order to provide a. locking means whereby each key will be firmly locked within the key pocket, I have provided a resilient locking member 21. The locking member 21 is constructed in the form of an elongated fiat spring 28 which is secured by fastening means 29 to the rear wall II.
The upper end of the locking member 28 is bent forwardly and right angularly as indicated at 30 so that the forwardly extending and right angular portion 30 will engage over the upper end of the head 23 of the key as shown in Figures 2 and 3. In this manner, each filing card will hold at least two keys or as many keys as there are pockets formed in the card and these keys may be of different thicknesses.
Where the keys are relatively thin so that they will be relatively loose in the key pockets, the heads 23 of the keys will bear against the upper ends of the interposed strips I9 or 20 and the locking member 21 will securely hold the key against upward or outward movement of the key.
In the use of this device, the key is inserted into key pocket 2| or 22 by bending the locking member 2! rearwardly as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3. The key is inserted to the depth permitted by the head 23 which will engage the upper end of either divider strip 2| ordividel;
strip 22. The locking member 21 is then released so that the locking bill 30 will engage over the upper end of the head 23 of the key. The card with the inserted key or keys may then be placed in a filing drawer 3| as shown in Figure 5 and the name of the owner of the key or keys is inserted on the identification card I6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A key "firing card comprising'a card member having a "key receivingpocketjsaid pocketbeing adapted to receive the shank of a key, an elongated resilient locking member fixed at one end of said card and extending above an upper edge 2. ,A key filing card-comprising a-pa-ir ofoverlying plate members-secured together atispaced intervals defining :a :pair of spaced apart key bendable to permit themmevafl o'ftlze key from the respective pocket.
