Claims. 1.

This invention relates to file. or index label holders, and particularly to improvements in label holders of thatkind which comprise a card, folder, or relatively thin, card-like guide or element for us'ein' card and-other files, and: ori-a tab or marginal portion of which the label holder is mounted or provided;

One object of my invention is to improve the constructionof label holders of this sort, whereby the new and improved results and advantages hereinafter mentioned. are obtained. Other objects of the invention are to provide a practical and desirable label holder of novel construction which reduces the thickness of the label holder; which faciiitatesi the insertion of the. label into and its removal from the holder: which insures a a more reliable and. durable connection: of the holder strip or member with: its supporting guide or element.

Further objects and advantages ot the: invention will: appear from: the following specification of the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying. drawings, and the novel features of the invention are set forth in the appended claims.

Describing? the preferred construction of the guide and label holder illustrated in the drawings, It represents the file guide or element which is in the form of a card having an upwardly projecting holder tab or extension I. I at-its top. This guide or element may be made of a piece of cardboard, fiherboard or analogous relatively thin, stiff sheet or plate of other suitable material, and forms thesupporting member of the label holder which is. formed by said guide and a cooperating holder strip or member applied to the tap portion I iof the guide. 7 This holder strip preferablyco'nsists of a thin strip or piece of Celluloid or analogous transparent sheet material having an intermediate portion [2 and folded flanges or portions t3- and M which extend rearwardly andinwardly from the upper and lower, or opposite, margins of the intermediate portion l2. The intermediate portion- L2 and top flange l'3- ofthe holder strip straddle the upper edge'or tab H of the guide with said intermediate portion spaced forwardly from the front face of theguide, and the bottom flange Mi extends up between said intermediate portlont2 and the guide and engages thev front of the guide. The space thus left between the: intermediate strip portion [2' and the front face of the guide forms an open-ended receiving or holding pocket forthe label, which is shown at I5; and is insertable into said pocket througheither open end thereof, and is confined in the pocket between the top and bottomflanges -3 and M. The inwardly extending. portion of the-top-fia-nge l3 engages and may be suitably attached to the rear face of the guide to secure. the holder strip in place on the guide.

A depression. i6 is formed in the front-face of the guide-or guide tab in position for the bottom flange M of the holder strip to seat in said depression. As shown, this depression is made by suitably embossing the guide If] at H, the embossment forming. the depression [-6 in the front of the guide and arr. opposite low ridge or projection-on the back of the guide. Preferably the depression is of a depth at least equal to the thicknessof flange [4,01 is substantially equal in depth with. the thickness of the flange so that whenthe flange is seated in the depression, the front face of the flange will be substantially flush with thef-ront face'of the guide, or at least, will not project outof the depression beyond-said front face. Thus, the flange cannotform a projecting obstruction on which theend' of the label would be apt'to catchso as to-interfere with the ready insertion of the label into the holder pocket, as is the case inprevious label holders of this type, inwhich the flange is not depressed to or below the front-face of the guide, but projects out forwardly therefrom Therefore, the end of the label ca-nbe-plac'edagainstthe front face of the guide andeasily slid thereon into the-label pocket of the holder without likelihood of striking and being obstructedby engagement with the end of th flange; l his greatly facilitates the ease of inserting the label into the holder. Furthermore, this construction reduces the thickness. of the label holder, or projection of the holder forwardly from the guide as compared with previous constructions in which the bottom flange of the holder strip bears against the undepressed front 3 face of the guide and, therefore, increases the thickness of the holder to the extent of the thickness of the flange 14.

As shown the retaining flange l3 of the holder strip terminates at or short of the embossed ridge ll on the back of the guide, and since the height of this ridge is substantially equal to the thickness of the flange, the ridge does not add to the total transverse thickness of the label holder.

Preferably the length and width dimensions of the depression 16 approximately equal the corresponding dimensions of the flange l4 so that the flange will fit fairly snugly in the depression and will be held from shifting lengthwise or widthwise therein, and thus acts or tends to function to retain the holder strip in place on the guide. If the holder strip is made of material having sufficient resilient stiffness and the bounding edges of the depression l6 are adequately sharp, additional securing means for the holder strip may be unnecessary, but if required, the holder strip may be secured in place on the guide in any usual or suitable way, such as by a cement or adhesive applied between the flange I3, or both flanges l3 and I4, and the guide, or by causing one or both of these flanges to adhere to the guide by the application of heat and pressure with the application, if necessary, of a solvent to the securing face or faces of the flange or flanges. The described label holder can be used on a plastic, metal or other guide, and on any blank card, index guide, folder or other suitable file element.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a card-like file element having an embossment spaced inwardly from an edge of the element and forming a depression in the front face of the element and an opposite ridge on the rear face of the element, of a thin holder strip having flanges extending rearwardly and inwardly from opposite margins of an intermediate connecting portion of said strip, said intermediate portion and one flange straddling said edge of said element with said intermediate strip portion spaced from the front face of the element and said flange secured to the rear face of the element and terminating between said edge of the element and said ridge, and said second flange being spaced rearwardly from said intermediate strip portion and seated in said depression in said element.

2. The combination with a card-like file element having a shallow depression in the front face thereof spaced inwardly away from the adjacent edge of the element, of a thin holder strip having flanges extending rearwardly and inwardly from opposite margins of an intermediate portion of said strip, said intermediate portion and one flange straddling said edge of the element with said intermediate strip portion offset forwardly away from the plane of said front face of the element and forming therewith a label-receiving pocket having an open entrance end for the label in front of said front face of said element, and said second flange being spaced rearwardly from said intermediate strip portion and seated in said element depression and confined therein against shifting in any direction in the plane of the flange by the bounding edge walls of said depression, whereby said flange tends to retain said strip in place on said element.

3. The combination with a card-like file element having a shallow depression in the front face thereof spaced inwardly from an adjacent edge of the element, a pocket-forming holder member secured to said file element and having a thin front wall portion parallel with and offset forwardly away from the plane of said front face of the file element and forming therewith a label-receiving pocket having an open entrance end for the label in front of said front face of the file element, and a rear wall portion spaced rearwardly from said front wall portion and seated in said depression to a depth approximately equal to the thickness of said rear wall portion, whereby the front face of said rear wall portion is approximately'flush with said front face of the file element and will not interfere With easy insertion of the label into said pocket.

4. The combination with a card-like file element having a shallow depression in the front face thereof spaced inwardly from an adjacent edge of the element, of a thin holder strip having flanges extending rearwardly and inwardly fromopposite margins of an intermediate portion of said strip and located back of and spaced from said intermediate strip portion, said intermediate portion and one flange straddling said edge of the file element and said second flange being seated for its full thickness in said depression, said intermediate strip portion being spaced forwardly from the front faces of the element and of said second flange and forming therewith a label-receiving pocket having an open entrance end for the label in front of the front face of said file element, whereby said second flange will not project out from the front face of the file element and interfere with easy insertion of the label into said pocket.

5. The combination with a card-like file element having a shallow depression in the front face thereof spaced inwardly away from the adjacent edge of the element, of a thin holder strip having flanges extending rearwardly and inwardly from opposite margins of an intermediate portion of said strip, said intermediate portion and one flange straddling said edge of the element for retaining the holder strip on the flle element and with said intermediate strip portion offset forwardly away from the plane of said front face of the element and forming therewith a label-receiving pocket having an open entrance end for the label in front of said front face of said element, and said second flange being seated in said depression with the lengthwise edge of the flange arranged to abut the adjacent bounding wall of the depression and thereby obstruct escape of the flange from the depression in a direction to allow disengagement of the holder strip from said edge of the file element.
