Description

F. W. STEVENS.
MOUNTING FOR CARDS.
APPL'lcATloN FILED APR. 1|. 191s.
Patented oct. 26,1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE.
FREDERICK W. STEVENS, OF ST. P AUL, MINNESOTA.
MOUNTING FOR CARDS.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. STE- vENs, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mountings for Cards, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to mountings for cards and resides in the formation of a card holding mat and the employment of a card retaining sheet secured to the back of the mat.
In practising my invention I form the mat of a single piece of sheet material having a border portion surrounding the mat opening and a second portion surrounding the border portion and lying farther to the rear to form a depression in the back of the mat that immediately surrounds the mat opening and a raised border on the front of` the mat that also immediately surrounds the mat opening, I unite a sheet of suitable material such as paper to the back of said border portion by glue or other adhesive causing the sheet to be free of adhesion to said border portion along the inner edges of such border portion to accommodate a card be tween the sheet and mat.- An opening is provided between the sheet and mat along one inner edgeof the border portion to permit of the insertion of the card.
The invention has other features and characteristics and will be fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a yfront view of a mounting made in accordance with the invention, a picture card being shown within the mounting; Fig. 2 is a back View of the structure shown in Fig. l parts being broken away to reveal details of construction; Fig. 3 is a view on line 3-3 of-Fig. 2 but on a larger scale; andFig. 4 is a perspective view taken from the-rear of the .mounting showing a card in the act of being inserted within the mounting.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The matv formed of a portion' 1 of the mountingiis single piece of sheet material such as heavy cardboard. The border portion 2 of the mat' which immediately surrounds the mat opening 3 is in turn surrounded by another portion 4 which l y/ i Specification of Letters Patent.
n in any of its parts,
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application led April 11, 1918. Serial No. 227,908.
lies farther to the rear of said border portion to form a depression 5 in the back 'of th mat 'that immediately surrounds the mat opening and a raised border on the front of the mat that also immediately surrounds the mat opening, this depression being preferablysuiiiciently deep to hold the card' 6 with the back face of the card substantially flush with the rearmost face of the mat. I dispose adhesive, such as glue which backof the border portion 2 and preferabl on each side of the opening, the back face of the border portion being -free of this adhesive along the inneredge of the border portion as indicated at 8. A other suitable material 9, which is preferably somewhat thick, is caused to adhere to the rear face of said border portion by said adhesive, this sheet being free of adhesion to said border portion along the inner edges of said border portion because of the .absence of adhesive at 8 whereby the edge or marginal portions of the card 6 may be interposed between the portions 8 of the border and said sheet. The sheet is preferably caused to adhere 'to the border portion on all sides of the mat opening 'in order that the.
sheet may be prevented from buckling sheet of paper oris indicated at 7 in Fig. 2, on the and in order that the card may readily be inserted in its mounting the sheet is slit along one inner edge of the bor# der portion, say the top inner edge as indicated at l0. In order that the card may readily be inserted through this slit into the space between the sheet and the parts 8 of the border portion 2 the sheet is depressed rearwardly along the lines ll to form a pocket conforming to the thickness and the other dimensions of the card. After the card has been inserted and bottomed in this pocket, -the pocket is closed at its card receiving end. To this end the sheet is desirably provided with a tab l2 that is coated with adhesive material upon the face thereof that opposes the back of the border portion 2. When the card has been fully inserted this adhesive material is moistened and the tab is pressedagainst the back of the border portion 2 above the card to close the pocket. A finishing sheet 13 may be pasted` over the back of the portion 4 of the mat and the contiguous marginal portions of the sheet 9.
Having thus described my invention .I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following: f
hesion to said border portion along the inner edges of said border portion to accommodate e card between the sheet and met, said sheet being slit along one inner edge of the border portlon to form an opening between said sheet and met to permit of the insertion of the card, said sheet having a tab for attachment to the met Where the opening between the sheet and mat is located.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my neme this 30th da of March A. D. 1918.
FREDER CK W. STEVENS.
