JAMES HANDFORD BROWN, OF GOYTESVILLE, NEW JERSEY GREETINGS CALENDAR AND'THE inn Application filed March 10, isaiJs'eriai No. 521,448. 1
The object of this invention is to provide a greetings device adapted to enclose a piece ofjcurrency or other token and to expose some picture thereon, as the central vignette found on United States bills, and also to expose a piece of currency and bearing therein, opposite the aperture, the second named picture. In the form herein shown the card may have, projecting from the main portion or panel thereof which has the aperture, means whereby it may be set up upright, easel-fashion, as a pair of lateral wings projecting from the panel and capable of being bent backwardas supports. The device so constructed may bear some advertising matter of the donor and in addition, to make it useful to the recipient, a calendar or equivalent pad or the like. 1
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a front QlBValZIOD-Of the device,
showing the bill in place;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the billremoved and showing the picture;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; and Fig. 4 shows the envelope in perspective. Let 1 designate a panel of stifi paper or cardboard. This may have applied to its obverse face a calendar, memorandum or the like 2, which is here arranged near the base of the panel and at its front side. At 3 is an aperture, preferably elliptical since usually the vignette'or the like on the paper money to be exposed by said opening has thz t form. 'Attached to the reverse face of the panel 1 is an envelope 4 of sheet material, as paper, which hasa picture 5 displayed thereon and is so arranged that the picture is opposite and maybe seen at the aperture'when not covered. In the preferred form this en.
velope is formed from an elongated sheet of paper folded transversely at about its middle, one layer 4a thereof bearing on its inside or obverse face the picture 5 and the other layer 4b'having an aperture 6 which registers with the picture in the folded condition of exposed.
the envelope and also having side flaps 7 which are glued (as at 8)'o1' pasted to the layer 4a, thus leaving the envelope open at 9 to admit the bill. This envelope is glued, as at 10, to the back of the panel with its open ing 9 up and so that its aperture 6 registers with aperture 3 of the panel. I might employ for the envelope a single thickness of paper having the picture except that with such a construction the envelope cannot-open sufficiently to readily admit the bill unless it is of ample width, which in many cases is not possible owing to the limited width of the. panel; by providing an envelope having 1 a rear wall 4a and a front wall 4?), joined by. flaps 7', the envelope has ample expansibility for entering the bill.
My invention broadly contemplates a greetings device comprising a front wall of sheet material (here taken as including parts 1 1 4b7) having an aperture, therein, and a rear wall of sheet material (here 4a) arranged against the rear side of the front wall and secured thereto (by the adhesive shown in Fig. 4 on flaps '7) around three sides of said aperture and free at the fourth side thereof and thus forming with the front wall a pocket to receive a token to be disposed opposite the aperture, said rear wall having a picture arranged to be exposed at said aperture. 7
' At 11 is shown the token, here a piece of paper currency, with its vignette appearing through the apertures 3 and 6.
The panel may have side flaps 12 which are capable of being bent back on lines 13 so that they will support the device upright or easel-fashion, on a horizontal surface.
The device may have printed thereon any 6 advertisement or other inscription of the sender, and when the bill 11 is removed'by the recipient the device still remains useful as an ornament because the picture 5 is then Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is: p
1. The hereindescribed greetings device comprising a panel of sheet material having an aperture therein and an envelope secured to the reverse side of the panel opposite the aperture, said envelope having a front wall apertured opposite said aperture and a rear wall bearing on the obverse side thereof a picture opposite both apertures.
5 2. The hereindescribed greetings device comprising a panel of sheet material having an aperture therein and an envelope consisting of a piece of sheet material folded on itself to form two walls and having one such wall apertured and secured to the reverse face of the panel with its aperture opposite the first aperture and its other wall provided on its inside face with a picture opposite said apertures, said piece having side flaps joining the two walls thereof together at their side edges.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JAMES HANDFORD BROVN.
