Description
Sept. 13, 1960 C. R. CHAMBERLIN SELF ADHESIVE LABEL HOLDER Filed Nov. 13, 1958 INVENTOR. COLEMAN R. CHAMBERLIN A TTOIPAZI United States Patent y SELF ADHESIVE LABEL HOLDER Coleman R. Chamberlin, Thompson Ridge, N.Y.
Filed Nov. 13, 1958, Ser. No. 773,608
' 1 Claim. or. 40-16) The present invention relates to a label holder. More particularly, the invention relates to a holder for labels and similar strips utilizing an open-ended sheath formed of transparentmaterial for holding a label strip slidably inserted therein. The label holder includes coupling means aifixed thereto to facilitate attachment of said label holder to a supporting surface.
In accordance with the present invention, a rectangular sheet of transparent material is folded on itself along both longitudinal edges in a manner whereby the edges extend around and embrace a card to form a fixed openended sheath on the front face of the card, and a longitudinal portion of the sheet along each of the longitudinal edges adjacent the front face of the card is spaced from the front face of the card by a distance relatively greater than the distance between the remainder of the sheet and the front face of the card in a manner whereby the edge at each side end of the sheet defines an opening for the slidable insertion and removal of a label strip between the sheet and the front face of the card. The folded-over portions of the longitudinal edges of the sheet are secured to the back face of the card and adhesive material is affixed to the outside surfaces of the folded-over portions of the longitudinal edges of the sheet to facilitate attachment of the label holder to a supporting surface.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the label holder of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a back view of the embodiment of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the embodiment of Fig. 1 taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of the view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification of the embodiment of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the embodiment of Fig. 5, taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, a card 11 is provided of suitable material, such as, for example, cardboard, relatively rigid plastic, or similar material. A sheet 12 of transparent material, such as clear, relatively flexible plastic, celluloid, or similar material, is placed over the card 11 and folded on itself along both longitudinal edges 14 of the card 11. The edges of the sheet 12 are bent in a manner whereby they extend around and embrace the card 11 along the longitudinal edges 14 to form a fixed open-ended sheath on the front face 15 of said card (shown in Fig. 4).
In accordance with the invention, a longitudinal por- 2,952,087 PatentedSept. 13, 1960 tion 17 and 18, respectively, of the sheet 12 along each of the longitudinal edges 14 adjacent the front face 15 of the card 11, is spaced from said front face of said card by a distance relatively greater than the distance between the remainder of said sheet and said front face of said card in a manner whereby the edge 19 and 20, respectively, at the ends of said sheet define end edge openings for the slidable insertion and removal of a label strip between the said sheet and the said front face of the said card. The label strip is slidably inserted and removed to and from a space 21 between the front face 15 of the card 11 and the transparent sheet 12, as shown in Fig. 4; the space 21 between said front face and said sheet being exaggerated in value for the purpose of illustration and actually preferably being only slightly larger than the thickness of the label strip.
Each of the longitudinal portions 17 and 18 of sheet 12 respectively, is of substantially arcuate configuration formed in the sheet 12 and preferably of substantially semi-oval or semi-circular configuration.
The utilization of the longitudinal portions 17 and 18, in accordance with the present invention, not only assures the easy insertion and removal of the label strip from the label holder, but retains said label strip in position in said holder. These advantages of the configuration of the present invention are brought about by the relative flexibility of the sheet 12 and its longitudinal portions 17 and 18. The longitudinal portions 17 and 18 further insure that the longitudinal edge of the label strip will not fray or tear upon insertion or removal of said strip in the label holder.
The label strip is inserted in the label holder with the matter printed or otherwise placed on its front face visible through the transparent sheet 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
The folded-over portions 22 and 23, respectively, of the longitudinal edges 14 of the sheet 12 are preferably secured to the back face 24 (shown in Fig. 4) of the card 11 by any suitable means, such as, for example, an adhesive material (not shown).
Any suitable coupling means may be aflixed to the label holder of the present invention to facilitate attachment thereof to a supporting surface, such as, for example, a wall, a desk, a window or a shelf. A suitable coupling means preferably comprises a coating 27 of an adhesive material affixed to the outside surfaces 25 and 26, respectively, of the folded-over portions 22 and 23, respectively, of the longitudinal edges 14 of the sheet 12, as shown in the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
In the modification of Figs. 5 and 6, the coating of adhesive material 27 is affixed substantially continuously to the outside surfaces 25 and 26, respectively, of the folded-over portions 22 and 23, respectively, of the longitudinal edges 14 of the sheet 12 and to the back face 24 of the card 11 to provide a stronger adhesion to the supporting surface. In this form the body of the holder is elongated and narrow.
The adhesive material utilized is preferably one which which will not dry, so that it does not need moistening to make it adhere to an object. To retain the permanent sticking quality of this adhesive, a covering of oiled paper, or similarly-acting material 30 may be placed over each coating 25 and 26, which is removed when the label holder is to be attached to a supporting surface.
By making the label holder of the present invention of a small size, it may be utilized as a label holder or index holder, and in order to cheapen production, the device may be made in long lengths and then cut to the desired sizes.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself'tothe preciseconstru'etions herein 1 disclosed that variouschanges andmodifications may be made withinthe scope of the invention as defined in the appended clairn'.'
Having thus described any inventionrwhat I claim as new, and desire tosecure by UnitedtStates Letters Patent is: a a a A label holder for alabel strip comprising a flat rec tangular card having a front face and a back face, a Hat rectangular sheet of transparent material folded. on
