COLEMAN R. CII-IAMBERLINv United States ltltfnf 2,977,698 LABEL HOLDERS FOR BINDING BACKS OF BOOKS 'Coleman R. Chamberlin, Thompson Ridge, N.Y. Filed Feb. 26, 1960, ser. No. 11,352
.3 Claims. (Cl. 40-16) This invention `relates to label holders for books and more particularly to a transparent' label holder adapted to be permanently secured to the back of the book, or other object having an arcuate surface.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a label holder for a book or the like, said label holder having a transparent body serving as a window for displaying the label.
Another object of the invention is to provide a label holder for a book or the like, said holder having a transparent body serving as a vwindow for displaying the label, the body having strips of adhesive for securing the holder to the back of the book or the like.
A further object is to provide a label holderfor a book or the like, the holder having a transparent body serving as a window for displaying the label, the body having Vstrips of adhesive for securing the holder to the back of the book or the like, and having plastic strips over the adhesive strips for protecting the adhesive until used.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a label holder for a book or the like that is simple in construction, attractive in appearance and economical to manufacture. y
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying draw- Y ings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set Y forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book having a label holder embodying my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of a label holder embodying my invention, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 on a larger scale.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged rear elevational view of the label holder, the protective strips for the adhesive being omitted.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of one of the strips for protecting the adhesive.
Fig. 7 is an elevational view of an adhesive strip.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 4 of a modication, the label being omitted.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in Fig. 2 a label holder embodying the invention is shown and designated generally by the'reference number 10, and in Fig. l, the label holder 10 is shown in position at the top of the back 12 of a book 14, with a ilexiblelabel 16 supported therein. The label holder 10 comprises an elongated rectangular body 18 slightly arcuate in cross section. The body is formed of a transparent sheeting or extruded plastic material, preferably of cellulose acetate or the like. The long side edges of the body are turned inwardly, forming elongated loops 20 with the extremities ICC of the edges yieldingly contacting the body 18. The extremities of the elongated looped edges serve as clamps for clamping the label 16 in juxtaposition against the inner surface of the body 18. The ends of the loops 20 as shown are open, but may be constructed as a seamless tube arcuated and backed by an adhesive over the entire concave surface.
In accordance with the invention, each of the outer surfaces of the elongated side edges or loops 20 is covered with a strip of adhesive 22 extending the length of the loop. The adhesive is desirably of a pressure-sensitive,
water-insoluble homogeneous compound lsuch as an ad hesive of a latex base, but the adhesive may be of a glutenous substance such as a watersoluble remoistening glue. The adhesive strip may take the form of a strip of cloth impregnated with the adhesive or the adhesive may be coated onto the body 18 directly. The adhesive is preferably marked on both sides with small vindentations 24 to serve as miniature vacuum cups or pockets for more secure attachment to the book.
In order to protect, the adhesive strip 22 before its use for attaching the label holder on a book, it is desirable that a protective backing strip 26 of knurled polyethylene or other nonsticking, nonabsorbent material be applied to the outer surface of the adhesive strip in order to assure freshness over a period of time and to prevent evaporation of solvents therein. One surface of the backing strip 26 is preformed with spaced pockets or cups 28 throughout its area which make impressions in the adhesive when the strip is pressed thereagainst which impressions assist in tenaciously fastening the label holder 10 to the back 12 of the book 14.
In use, a label 16 is inserted endwise through one end of the holder with its long edges between the loops 20 and the body. The backing strips 26 are stripped off of the adhesive strips 22 and the label holder 10 with the label 16 clamped inside is placed against the back of the book with the adhesive strips 22 in engagement therewith. Pressure on the label holder will press the adhesivestrips 22 into intimate relationship with the back of the book and thereby permanently fasten the holder with label onto the book.
In Fig. 8, the modification differs from the form of Figs. l to 7, inclusive, in that the long edges of the body 18 are turned in farther, forming wider elongated loops 20', and the strips 22 of adhesive and the backing strips f 26' are correspondingly wider in dimensions.
The label holder may be of any desired dimensions and may be colored if desired.
While the label holder is shown applied to the back of a book, it will be understood that such a label holder could be applied to a desk tray, shelving, or any other object having an arcuate surface or projection.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modications may be made within the scope of the invention as delined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A label holder for a book or the like comprising an elongated transparent plastic body, said body being slightly arcuate-shaped in cross section, the long edges of the body turned inwardly forming `elongated loops open at both ends, the extreme edges of the loops closely spaced from the body for clamping a flexible label between the loops and body, the outer surfaces of the elon- 3 having pockets over the entire area of the surface thereof to enhance the stickability thereof.
2. A label holder for a book or the like comprising an elongated transparent plastic body, said body being slightly arcuate-shaped in cross Section, the long edges of the body turned invvardlyforming elongated loops open at both ends, the extreme edges of the `loops closely spaced from the body for clamping a exible label between the loops and body, the outer surfaces of the elongated loops being coated with adhesive for fastening the holder to the back of a book or the like, said adhesive having pockets over the entire area of the surface thereof to enhance the stickability thereof, and removable plastic backing strips over the adhesive coatings for protecting said coatings until ready for use.
3. A label holder for a book or the like comprising an elongated transparent plastic body, said body being slightly arcuate-shaped in cross section, the long edges `of the body turned inwardly forming elongated loops open at both ends, the cxtreme edges of the loops closely spaced from the body for clamping a eXible label between the loops and body, the outer surfaces of the elongated loops being coated with adhesive for fastening the holder to the back of a book or the like, said adhesive having pockets over the entire area of the surface thereofto enhance the stickability thereof, and removable plasticy backing strips over the adhesive coatings for protecting said coatings until ready for use, said plastic strips having pockets impressionable against the adhesive.
