Description
July 24, 1956 c. w. GOLDEN 2,755,576
ADVERTISING DISPLAY PAD Filed Dec. 19. 1950 IN V EN TOR. C/a/r W 60/aen Affomeys Unite Patented July 24, 1956 ADVERTISING DISPLAY PAD Clair W. Golden, San Francisco, Calif. Application December 19, 1950, Serial No. 201,543 3 Claims. (Cl. 40-10) This invention relates to a new and improved advertising display device, and, more particularly, this invention relates to a removably adhesively supportable advertising display pad.
The particular embodiment of the present invention which is illustrated in the drawings and which will be described hereinafter in greater detail, comprises, generally, a tablet comprising a relatively thick backing sheet mounting a plurality of overlying individual tear-off sheets on which advertising indicia (such as recipes) are printed. A signature tab attached adhesively to the back of the backing is arranged to form an upwardly extending flexible piece provided with pressure sensitive adhesive, to permit the tablet to be removably adhesively mounted to a supporting member. The upwardly extending portion of the signature tab, being flexible, permits the display device to be pressed into conformable adhesive engagement with irregularly contoured supporting surfaces, such as for example, corrugated webs of conventional price channels of the type frequently installed in grocery stores adjacent products being otfered for sale.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel and interesting advertising medium for stimulating customer interest in selected products being offered for sale in a grocery store or the like. More specifically, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide an advertising display tablet comprising a plurality of individual tear-off sheets on which are marked recipes or other items of interest concerning a particular product or store item being offered for sale, and which is constructed so as to be adaptable for mounting adjacent the particular product itself to generate buying interest with respect thereto.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a display device of the character heretofore briefly mentioned which can be readily and rapidly removably adhesively mounted to any number of types of supporting surfaces. A more specific object is to provide such a device which incorporates flexible adhesive means to permit said device to be firmly removably adhesively attached to irregularly contoured supporting surfaces in conformable engagement with said surfaces.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar characters of reference represent corresponding parts in each of the several views.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view from the front left showing the device mounted in a grocers price channel.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the right rear showing the protective adhesive cover strip partially removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the embodiment of the present invention therein illustrated comprises a tablet, indicated generally at which includes, more particularly, a relatively thick and stiff backing sheet 11, preferably formed of fine grade chip board, supporting a plurality of relatively thinner individual overlying tear sheets 12. The tear sheets 12 are joined together and to the backing by a suitable padding compound or strip indicated generally at 13.
More particularly, padding strip 13 is bonded to the top edges of the tear sheets and to the top edge of backing sheet 11, and in this connection it is noted that said padding strip is coextensive in width to the combined thicknesses of the tear sheets and backing whereby said padding strip extends from the outermost edge 14 of the tear sheets to point 15 coplanar with the back surface of backing 11. Preferably, padding strip 13 consists of a strip of fabric material 16, coated on both sides with a suitable bonding material or compound 17. The bond between the padding strip and the top edge of each tear sheet is such that the latter may be easily individually stripped or torn from the tablet thereby affording a means for persons to remove one or more sheets for individual use. It is contemplated, of course, that each tear sheet will have printed on it advertising material or other information of prospective interest to customers, such as for example, recipes or the like.
Attached adhesively to the back of backing sheet 11 is a signature tab 19 preferably formed of an index type paper strong enough to support the device without tearing or rupturing but which, on the other hand, is relative ly flexible. The upper portion of signature tab 19 projects above the top edges of the tear sheets and backing sheet to form an upward extension 21, on the front face of which may be marked, if desired, the name of the producer and/or seller of the products to which the advertising indicia on the tear sheets relates.
A strip of double-coated, relatively non-drying, pressure sensitive adhesive tape, indicated generally at 23, is secured adhesively by its inner face to the back of upwardly extending portion 21 of the signature tab, and is preferably substantially coextensive in area to said portion 21 of the signature tab. A particularly satisfactory type of adhesive tape consists of a paper tissue strip 30 coated on both sides, as at 31 and 32, with a normally tacky, relatively non-drying, pressure sensitive rubber base adhesive. A satisfactory tape of this latter type is produced by the Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, and is sold commercially as No. 400 Scotch Tape.
A removable protective tear-off cover strip preferably formed of crepe paper or the like is provided to cover the outer face 32 of the adhesive tape 23. Preferably the protective cover strip 24 is made slightly wider than the adhesive area which it is adapted to cover so as to provide a depending unattached finger-hold portion 25 to facilitate removal of the cover strip from the adhesive.
As mentioned hereinabove, the upwardly extending portion 21 of the signature tab (together with the adhesive tape secured thereto) is relatively flexible so as to permit said portion 21 to be pressed conformably against irregularly contoured supporting surfaces. For instance, certain types of conventional price channels, such as the one indicated at 26 in the drawings, are formed with corrugated or grooved web portions, such as indicated at 27. As demonstrated in Fig. 1, the upper tab portion 21 of the tablet, being relatively flexible, may be pressed conformably against the irregularly contoured surface of web portion 27 of price channel 26, whereby an adhesive bond is established between the tape and the web surface substantially throughout the entire area of outer adhesive surface 32 of the said tape. Similarly, the flexible tab permits the tablet to be firmly removably adhesively secured to other irregularly contoured supporting surfaces, such as molded shelf edges or the like.
Although the present invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity of understanding, it is understood that certain changes and modifications may be made Within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:

An advertising display pad comprising; a tablet comprising a relatively stitt backing mounting a plurality of overlying individual tear sheets having advertising display indicia marked thereon, a relatively flexible signature tab secured to said backing and extending above the top edge thereof, said signature tab extending substantially the full Width of said backing, a pressure sensitive adhesive carried by said signature tab and flexible therewith to permit the display pad to be secured adhesively to an irregularly contoured support, and a removable protective tear-ofi strip normally covering said adhesive.
