To all whom 'it may concern.'

Be it known that I, GABRIEL FELSENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The invention relates to picture frames and more particularly to those having a front face of celluloid or similar flexible material requiring a stiff metal backing throughout a substantial portion of its entire area. The object of the invention is to provide an attractive picture frame of durable but inexpensive construction and affording an etiicient protection for the contained picture. To this end the invention contemplates a construction wherein the celluloid front and its metal backing are permanently associated while still permitting the contained picture to be removably held in face contact with the said celluloid front.

In carrying out the invention a sheet metal plate 10 of substantially the size and shape of the completed frame is provided. This plate is centrally apertured at 11 in accordance with the size and shape of the picture, as 12, to be shown and it is preferably pressed to a curved form for imparting a somewhat bulging or convex contour to the front face 13 of the frame. The front face 13 comprises a continuous imperi'orate sheet of celluloid or similar flexible material. This sheet is stretched over the front of the metal plate 10 and these two parts are permanently united continuously along their entire margins, as at 14, by crimping the parts together in the manner well understood by those familiar with the working of these materials. As a celluloid sheet requires a metal backing throughout a substantial portion of the sheet, thev central Specification of Letters Patent.

l/Vhile that part of the front face 13 which extends over the opening 11 is desirably transparent, the remainder of the sheet may be ornamented by any desired method but it is preferably rendered opaque for the purpose of concealing the metal plate 10. T he drawings show a sheet 16 of ornamented paper permanently adhering to the front face 13 upon the inside of the same. The sheet 16 is centrally apertured to provide an opening 17 which registers with but is preferably slightly smaller than the opening of the plate 10.

The frame is most readily completed by applying a thick sheet 18 of a soft book binders board or the like to the rear face of the metal plate 10. The sheet 18 may be held in place by being pressed againstthe rear face of the metal plate 10 within the crimped margin 14 of the frame. T he introduction of the picture 12 is permitted by forming the sheet '18 with a central opening 19 of the full size of the picture and.

preferably somewhat larger than the central opening 11 of the metal plate 10. A plug 20 removably filling the opening 19 serves for holding the picture Flat against the transparent portion of the front face 13. 1f the plug 2O comprises that part of the sheet 1S which is removed by punching the opening 19 it will `tit the said opening suiiiciently tight to firmly hold the picture 12 in place and to insure against accidental removal of the plug.

`When the frame is to be used as an easel, a folding leg 21 may be provided. As shown, this leg is applied to the plug 20. A cord 22 for suspending the frame may also be supported, as by being attached to the sheet 18 above the opening 19. A linger hole 23 to facilitate the removal of the plug 2() is provided if the margin of the plug is notched, as at 24 (Fig. L1).

I claim as my invention:

1. A picture frame comprising, in combination, an integral flexible celluloid disk comprising a marginal portion of substantial width and a transparent portion located centrally within the said marginal portion, centrally apertured stiftl sheet metal shell forming a backing for the celluloid disk throughout its entire extent except at its said transparent portion, the edges of the said.,

disk and shell being interfolded continuously about the said disk and shell, and a removable pressure plate for holding apicture in face contact with the said transparentgportion of the Celluloid disk upon the inside of the same through the shell aperture.
