Description

June 4, 1935. J. v. cAvALERo PLAQUE Filed May 51 INVENTR. JOH CAW RO ATTORNEYS.
i PAUL AJ' Laar Patented June 4, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to a plaque having an easel and hanger, and particularly to the construction permitting large quantities to be manuiactured by machinery, yet without destroying their beauty.
The objects of my invention are:
To provide a plaque suitable for religious purposes.
To provide a plaque in which the rich mats, picture or other display are protected against being soiled by handling.
To provide a plaque which has the easel and hanger in a single piece and secured to the metal backing by being clamped under its turned over edges.
To provide an air tight transparent cover and a metal reeniorcement for securing and sealing the cover tc the other parts as herein more fully described to increase the durability of plaques and the like.
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which;
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the face oi' my device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing its application.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the easel.
Fig. 4 is a rear view, showing the reverse face of my device.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail, showing the various parts as they are assembled.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, showing a modiiication having a soft pad.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the accompanying drawing. forming a part hereof.
My device comprises the transparent outer cover (I), the picture or display (2). title (3), colored mats (I) and (B): the edges of each of the parts (3), (4) and (5) project beyond the part above it and all of the edges of the backing (8) as well as the parts secured to said backing are visible under said transparent covering as when looking at the front face of my device. The metal body (1) clamps the rear pad (B) and the frame (I8) of the easel (l) under the turned under edges of the metal body (1) which also clamps the edges of the outer cover (I) and the backing (B). The outer cover (I) and the backing (8) first are bent around the edges (I0) of the metal body (1) which is further bent back upon its central fiat portion along with said parts (I) and (8) to clamp said rear pad (B) and the (Cl. 1G-152.1)
frame (I8) of the easel (9). The metal body (l) is thus completely hidden from view by said backing (6) which in turn is completely covered with the transparent covering (I).
In the manufacture, the backing (6) rear pad (8) easel (9) and the transparent outer cover (I) are all held by and clamped under the turned over edges (I0) of the metal body (l) and the picture (2) title (3) and colored mats (4) and (5) which lie in layers between the transparent outer cover (I) and the backing (6), are secured to each other and to said backing (6) by means of adhesive at one end only, which permits free expansion of these parts, which prevents bulging or wrinkiing.
Dirt, dampness. insects etc., are prevented from damaging the various parts on the interior by the transparent outer cover which completely encloses them, yet permits them to be seen as weil as presenting the effect of a highly glossy surface.
My plaque may be frequently handled without soiling the delicate mats and picture or display etc.. and may be carried about and dropped without breaking or damage, thus making a very durable device as compared with the usual framed miniature pictures and plaques.
The easel (9) is stamped out of a single piece of material to form the hinges (Il), (I2) and (I3). The rear pad (8) is provided with a slot (I4) suitable in size and so located as to receive the end (I5) of the tongue (I6), as may be seen by referring to Fig. 2. 'I'he member (I1) to which the tongue (IG) is hinged at (I3) near its lower edge and suitable to permit said tongue to swing forward toward the rear or reverse surface of the plaque to engage said slot (I4) in said rear pad is hinged at (II) to the frame (I8) or the easel to permit said member (I'I) to swing outwardly and rearwardly; said frame (I8) iS clamped with the other parts, as aforesaid, under the turned over edges (I0) of the metal body (1).
The hanger (I9) is hinged at (I2) and, is provided with the aperture (2li) suitable to engage a hook or other means of hanging my plaque to the wall or elsewhere, when desired. Thus the hanger, tongue and member are all formed integral and secured to the plaque.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a soft pad (2l) of felt or other soft fibrous material to add thickness and softness to the touch, as well as a greater bevel to the face of my device.
I do not wish to be limited to the number or shape of the parts herein described and shown in the drawing. as I may wish to depart from them within the scope of the appended claims.
which succinctly set forth what I claim to be my invention.
I claim:
1. In a plaque, a backing on the face thereof having a display secured thereto, an easel trarne. a rear pad and a metal body between said backing and said rear pad and a transparent cover having its edges and the edges of said backing turned over and around the turned over edges of said metal body and clamped thereunder and between said easel frame whereby said metal body is completely obscured and covered on both the front and rear face of said plaque.
2. In a plaque, a display on the face thereof, a
transparent cover over said display, an easel and an easel frame hingeably secured to said easel on the reverse face, a metal body having turned over edges clamping said transparent cover and said easel frame thereunder, and a rear pad having a slot therein clamped under the turned over edges and positioned between said easel frame and said metal body and said rear pad and a tongue hingeably secured to the easel near its lower edge forming a part of said easel and engaging the slot in said rear pad when swung at angle to said easel.
