Description

June 13; 1933. I w Q, BROWN f 1,914,005
conmmmn FOR CIGARETTES Filed May 7-. 1931 Patenteci June 13, 1933 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER 0. BROWN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN a cigarette may be easily removed from the container.
When the pressure upon the lower face 10 of the container is removed the resilient member 11 and the resilient strips 13 will move the box to its closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. It will thus be seen that the container is easy to open and will automatically close.
It will be understood that the device is preferably made of some pliable material such as leather and will provide a neat and attractive package for carrying cigarettes.
A feature of the invention resides in the use of pliable or thin flexible material incapable of maintaining its form under pressure of the hand within which the package of cigarettes is positioned and which engages this pliable wall supporting and maintaining .the same in shape of the package. The combined package of cigarettes and receptacle of the character stated thus is practically as yieldable as the package of cigarettes, does not provide a hard stiff walled package which is objectionable to carry in a persons pocket. Thus my invention serves the pur pose of providing a much neater appearance than just a paper package of cigarettes and still is sufficiently pliable when the cigarette package is in the receptacle as not to be noticeable to a person carrying the same in the pocket as would be the case with many containers at present in use which are formed of stiff leather or metal.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that I have provided a container for cigarettes or the like which is neat and attractive in appearance and which may be opened by one hand and which is so designed as to close automatically when the pressure is removed which was applied to one face of the container to open the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A container for packaged cigarettes in which the package is of substantially rectangular form and is split across one face and the two ends thereof, comprising a flexible walled receptacle one face and the two ends thereof being split and one of the edges of the split face of the receptacle overlying the other edge of the split face when in the closed position, the split line of the receptacle registering with the split line of the package when positioned therein and the said walls of the package supporting the flexible walls of the receptacle, and a resilient rubber sheet applied to the inner side of the other face of the receptacle having its greatest thickness at about the center line opposite the splits of the package and receptacle and parallel thereto whereby'by grasping the receptacle at its two opposite side edges the said package is opened and the rubber element placed in tension tending to close the package upon release of pressure.
2. A container for packaged cigarettes in which the package is substantially of rectangular form and split across one face and two ends thereof comprising a receptacle formed of comparatively thin and flexible leather one face and the two ends thereof being split along a line registering with the split line of the package when positioned therein, the package supporting the walls of the receptacle maintaining the same in shape to approximately conform to the shape of the package, and a rubber sheet secured to the inner side of the other face of the receptacle and sheet being of greatest thickness along its median line parallel with the split lines of the package and the receptacle and tapering toward its opposite side edges and so arranged that by applying pressure to the opposite sides of the receptacle the said other face thereof is flexed inwardly to thereby simultaneously open the receptacle and the package and placing the inner face of the rubber sheet in tension and the outer centrally thickened portion thereof in compression whereby upon release of the pressure the package and the receptacle are automati-v cally closed. a
3. A container for packaged cigarettes in which the package is split across one face and the two ends thereof, comprising a receptacle in which the package is insertible and fitting the walls thereof, the said receptacle having a back of comparative stiffness formed of a resilient rubber, the opposite face, sides and end walls being of thin flexible material held to shape by the insertion of the package therein, the said receptacle having the flexible portions split across the saidtwo ends and face in registration with the split of the inserted package.
4. A container for packaged cigarettes in which the package is substantially of rectangular form and split centrally across one face and the two ends thereof comprising are; ceptacle of practically rectangular form, one face and the two ends thereof being split to approximately register with the split of the package when inserted therein, the rear wall of the package being of substantial stiffness and formed of a resilient material permitting the same to be opened by pressure on the two opposite edges of the rear wall and tending to close the package and receptacle upon release of pressure.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification.
