UNITE-D STATES PATEN ANDREW W. GRAHAM, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOETO THE CITY TRUST C0 BRANCH OF THE MARINE TRUST (70., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, AS TRUSTEE.
MATCH PACKET Application ma my 13,
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW W. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Packets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to match packets for advertising purposes and has special reference to improvements on the devices shown in my prior Patent No. 1,351,242 of August 31,1920, in my co-pending applications 429,238 and 429,239 filed December 9, 1920, my co-pending application 435,443 filed January 6, 1921, and my co-pending application 441,934 filed February 2, 1921.
One important object of the invention is to provide improved means suitable for holding an advertising match acket to a package such as a package 0 cigarettes,
tobacco, or any other package with which it is desirable to distribute matches as adver- A second important object of the invention is to, provide an improved means whereby the match'packet may be secured to a package irrespective of the size, within limits, of said package.
-A third important object of the invention is to provide a match packet which in itself may be used to carry cigarettes or the like.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this description being means for preventing the package from displacement in one direction.
A fifth important object of the invention packet.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed. g
In the accompanying-drawings, like character of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and 2 Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the improved match packet, the back being taken from the rear and shpwing the packet folded in full lines and opened for reception of a section in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the 1921. Serial no. 470,511.
packet shown in Figure 1 applied to a package of cigarettes.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the back of the packet illustrated in Figure 1 removed from the front to disclose the manner of applying a certain rubber band used in connection therewith.
Figure 4 is an inside view of the top cooperating with the back of Figure 9.
Figure 5 is a section on the line XI-XI of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section on the line XIIXII of Figure 3. A
Figure 7 is an enlarged detail section showing rubber band in position at a corner of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a rear view of a third modification of the improved packet.
Figure 9 is a section on the line XV-XV of' Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a section on the line XVI XVI of Figure 14.
Figure 11 is a view showing the modified form of the packet illustrated in my copending application No. 441,934 above referred to.
Throughout the various modifications illustrated in the present invention thematch packet is of the' single delivery type, being constructed as shown in my co-pending application N 0, 441,934. That'is to say, each of these packets is provided with a front member 10 which is suitably pressed from a f sheet of cardboard or the like so as to provide a shallow receptacle having a centrally disposed opening 11 for the insertion of the thumb and forefinger of the user in withdrawing match. Extending outwardly from the opening 11 are the Withdrawal slots 12 which are normally kept closed by the'resilient lips 13 just as described in the aforesaid co-pending application. first form herein illustrated and shown particularly in Figures 1, 2, and 9 to 13 inclusive it will be seen that the front of the match packet is provided with oppositely disposed notches 14. formed from a substantially rectangular strip of cardboard, millboard or the like and comprises a center body portion 15 of, such size as to' cover the rear face of the front 10 and having a groove 16 registering with the notch 14. Defined from this body 15 by folded lines 17 are side flaps 18 and at the In the 4 junction of the groove 16 and the folded lines 17 this back is notched as at 19 so that a rubber band 20 may be placed around the back and held in the groove 16 when the front 10 and back body 15 are secured together as by suitable adhesive. The band 20 is made sufiiciently short so that it will hold the flaps 18 against the body 15 as shown in full lines in Figure 1 when the device is not applied to a cigarette package. When it is desired to apply the device to a cigarette package it is merely necessary to open the flap 18 to dotted lines position in Figure 1 and slip such a packet as P underneath the rubber band as shown in' Figure 2. It will be obvious that any sized package, within limits, may have the match packet applied thereto in this manner and that as the cigarettes are used out of the packet P the rubber band will contract so that the packet and package will be held securely together.
In the form of the device shown in Figures 8 to 10 the front is made in such a manner as to have the edges turned down as at 32 and the back has a center portion 33 at each side of which the material is double as at 34: to form a rib fitting inside of the side edges 32 of the front. Outside of this ribis provided a side flap 35 similar in form 'ahd function to the flaps 18 of Figure 1. At each corner of the back 33 the material is cut and bent to form a diagonally extending rib 36 having flange 37 pasted or otherwise secured to the inside of the top 10. The rib 36 serves to prevent matches getting corner-Wise in the packet and also.
clearly strengthens I and reinforces such packet.
In the form shown in Figures 11 to 13 inclusive the top 10 is struck integrally from an ordinary top 38 of a hinged top cigarette box B. In this instance the back is formed by a sheet of material 39 applied in the usual manner to the inside of the top 38 and carrying suitable advertising matter just as the inside lining of present cigarette boxes is formed. Of course the same construction may be used with a cigarette box having a drawer or slide, the match holding compartment being struck out of this drawer or slide. It is to be noted that in such devices the striking surface ispreferably ,carried by the cigarette containing portion of the packet or package.
In Figure 14 is shown a modification of the type of packet illustrated in Figure 7 of my aforesaid cO-pending application, the only difference being that the front and back of the box are alike provided with the withdrawal opening 40 of the usual con-' struction.
It will be obvious that this box ma be made of any suitable material and nee not be necessarily made from cardboard although the same has been mentioned as one 3 or the sides may be folded in the shape of an accordion.
It will also be obvious that these boxes may be either filled before dispensing or may be given away or sold empty and to be filled by the user.
It is to be noted that all of these packets are provided with the usual striking strip A and that this may be applied tothe packet at any part thereof and to any extent or in any form desired.
here has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore.
desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A match packet comprising front and back body portions, side flap on said back body portions, and means for contracting the side flaps against a package resting against the back body portion.
2. A match packet comprising front and back body portions, side flaps on said back body portion, and an elastic band held between the front and back body pontlons and'engaging said side flaps to force them inward and toward the back body portion.
3. A match packet comprising a front pressed outwardly to provide a match receiving space, said front having lateral flanges provided with alined notches, a back includin a body having a transverse groove arrange with its ends in registry wlth the notches, flaps at the sides of said back and defined therefrom by foldglines, said backhaving notches at the ends of the groove, and an elastic band surrounding the back and flaps and having a portions lying in the groove.
4:. A match packet comprising a body portion formed to receive matches and constituting the front of the packet, and a back consisting of a single strip of material, said back having a central portion, doubled portions at the edges fitting within the sides of ture.
ANDREW W. GRAHAM.
