ATTORNEY United States Patent C 3,423,022 MAGNETIC DEODGRANT FIXTURE .lack C. Varley, Jack C. Varley Inc., 6801 Hoffmann Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63139 Filed Apr. 5, 1967, Ser. No. 628,686 U.S. Cl. 239-53 Int. Cl. A611 9/04 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An important object of this invention is to provide magnetic fixtures or carriers for disinfectants, deodorants and like media, which fixtures r carriers may be detachably secured, in face-to-face relationship to flat, curved or angular surfaces of supports.
Another important object of this invention is to provide fixtures or carriers for media as above which fixtures or carriers may be magnetically attached to metallic supports, or may be secured to non-metallic supports, such as of wood.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fixture or carrier as described above which is of pliable materials so that, when impregnated with suitable media, it may be squeezed in order to rid it of excess media so as to obviate drip thereof when the fixture or carrier is in contact with a support.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a portion of this disclosure, and in which drawing:
FIG. 1 is a plan View example of a form of the fixtures or carriers of this invention with the exposed face thereof disclosing a plurality of units of magnetic material.
FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the carrier of FIG. l wrapped partly around and in face contact with a portion of a curved face of a metallic support.
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the carrier of FIGS. l and 2 in face contact with a substantially fiat face of a metallic support.
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the carrier of FIGS. l, 2 and 3, in face-to-face contact with a nonmetallic support.
FIG. 5 is a plan view of another example of the carrier of this invention with the magnetic units of material thereof uppermost.
FIG. 6 is a sectional view, along the lines of FIG. 2, of the carrier of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is a lsectional view, `along the lines of FIG. 3, of the carrier of FIG. 5.
FIG. 8 is a sectional view, along the lines of FIG. 4, of the carrier of FIG. 5.
In the drawing, wherein the two forms of the carrier of this invention are shown by way of example, and wherein similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, the letter A designates the lform of carrier of FIGS. l to 4, and B the form of carrier of FIGS. 5 to 8, and the letters C, D, E, F, G and H supports for the carriers A or B.
In both forms ofthe carriers, each includes, as the case may be, receiving means 10 or 10' for the media to be carried thereby; backing means 11 or 11'; first attaching ICC means 12 or 12'; a plurality of units of magnetic material 13 or 13'; second attaching means 14 or 14'; and auxiliary non-magnetic means 15 or 15 to take the place, in some instances, of the units of magnetic material.
The receiving means 10 and 10 may be substantially alike and comprises bodies or lengths of pliable material having pluralities of pores, openings, interstices or the like. Such material may be sponge rubber, thick cloth, cotton batting, the modern plastic foams and the like. The material must be such as not to be attacked by any ingredient of the media. As one example of the size of a pliable material to form the receiving means, it may have a thickness of about one inch, longitudinal side faces 20 or 20' of about two-and-three-quarters inches and transverse end faces 21 or 21 of about two inches in length. Obviously, the material may have a round, oval or more angular shape or may be in strip form. The material will have a front face 22 or 22 and a back or rear face 23 or 23'.
The backing means 11 'and 11' for the carriers A and B respectively, may be of canvas, leather, tough paper and other like pliable material. Preferably, it is of less dimensions than the length of material constituting the receiving means 10 or 10' as may be seen in FIGS. 1 to 8 inclusive, so that, when the material of the backing means is centered on the material of the receiving means, there will be an overhang of the edge portions of the latter, as may be seen in the drawing. Thus the surface 'areas of the receiving means material has more than the faces 22 or 22', side faces 20 or 20' and end faces 21 or 21 exposed for evaporation of the media thereon.
The first and second attaching means 12 and 14 or 12' and 14' may be an epoxy adhesive, applied to the backing means 11 or 11' and to the back faces 23 or 23' of the receiving means 10 or 10' in order to secure the means 10 or 10' and 11 or 11' together. The attaching means 14 or 14 is employed to secure the unit of magnetic material 13 or 13' to the other faces on the respective backing means.
The units of magnetic material 13, of the carrier A of FIGS. l to 4 inclusive, are preferably elongate narrow strips arranged substantially in parallelism and spaced apart, one from the other. The spacing is such that the carrier A may be bent or curved from its normal fiat condition and will adhere to surfaces of various contours, such as the curved surface of the support C, which may be a pipe.
Another example of units of magnetic material is shown in FIGS. 5 to 8 inclusive, illustrating the second form B of the invention. Here, the units 13 are sections of conventional bead chains, wherein the beads are joined to links in a universal joint connection Ias is well known in the art. The beads 30 are of magnetic material and have at least two opposite, substantially fiat faces 31 and 32, with the faces 31 secured to the backing means 11 by the second attaching means 14'. This arrangement permits longitudinal and transverse curving or folding of the carrier B.
So that the carriers A and B may be attached to nonmetallic surfaces (as in FIGS. 4 and 8), I prefer to provide a perforation or opening 26 or 26' as may Ibe seen in FIGS. 4 and 8, including the central unit of magnetic material 13 and the enlarged link 33 'of the central unit of magnetic material 13' of the carrier B. These openings or perforations 26 and 26' are adapted to receive the heads 28 or 28 and portions of the Shanks of the auxiliary non-magnetic means 15 or 15' as the case may be, with the leading portions 27 or 27' of the Shanks extending into the supports E or H.
In the use of the carriers A or B the receiving means 10 or 10' may be introduced (as dipped) into a volume of the disinfectant, deodorant or other media, then squeezed in lorder to rid the receiving means of excess media. The carriers may then be applied to flat metallic supports as the supports D or G, or to the curved supports C or F, by way of example.
If the supports are non-metallic, the auxiliary means 15 or15 may be used, as in FIGS. 4 or 8.
The sizesof the carriers A and B may be varied to suit conditions, such as the area available for application. They may be applied to inconspicuous portions of pipes, the underside of the overhang of table and desk tops, corner portions of drawers, and the raised lbottoms of furniture, cabinets and the like, by way of example. In fact, they may 'be spaced apart slightly on a long length of the ybacking means of this invention, so as to be severed into suitable lengths for use, and marketed in the long lengths, if desirable.
Various changes may Ibe made to the form of the invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
