COMMUNION KNEELER COVER Filed Feb. 3, 1940 INVENTOR JBkn 67222320 limb/1e; BY
ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 23, 1941 UN ITE STAT Application February 3, 1940, Serial No. 317,086
9 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a communion kneeler cover.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a resiliently constructed cover for application to the top surface of a kneeler used by parishioners during confessional, communion or the like services.
Still further it is proposed to characterize the cover by a soft flexible cushion base constructed preferably of sponge rubber and over which a solid rubber flexible sheet is extended and attached in a manner to form a cover having a smooth surface and still providing suflicient resiliency to give way under ones weight while resting thereon.
Still further it is proposed to attach the cover to the top face of the kneeler with its front edge arrangedflush with the front edge of the kneeler and to provide a means in the form of a flexible sheet of material for securing the front edge of the cover to the front edge of said kneeler in such a manner that the cover may stretch in its width under the compression force of a person resting thereon.
Still further it is proposed in a modified form of the invention to provide a second strip of flexible sheet material attached to the bottom of the front edge portion of the cover and extended rearwards on the kneeler and attached thereto in a manner to assist said first mentioned strip in securely holding the cover in position thereon.
center of the kneeler.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but illustrating the compressed position of the cover.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 and illustrating a still further modification of the invention.

to the front edge of the kneeler II].
this invention, is to be used in combination with a kneeler It in the form of a long bench adapted to be placed between the adjacent pews II of a church in a manner to be used by the parishioners for kneeling during confessional, communion, or the like services.
The cover, according to this invention, includes a soft flexible cushion base I2 movably mounted on the top of the wooden pew kneeler I0 which has a rounded front edge I2 slightly inwards of This soft flexible cushion base I2 is preferably constructed of sponge rubber and is adhesively attached to the face of the kneeler by means of an adhesive I3. The back edge of the cushion base I2 is extended slightly inwards from the back edge of the kneeler II]. A cork back strip I4 is in face contact with the back edge of the cushion base I2 and is provided with a rounded edge which extends substantially to the back edge of the kneeler II]. The cork back strip I4 is adhesively attached to the face of the kneeler.
'A solid rubber flexible sheet I5 is adhesively attached to the top face of the base I2 and the cork back strip I4 and extends from the back edge of the kneeler across the top face of the cushion base I2 around the front edge thereof This solid rubber flexible sheet I5 acts as a protective covering for the sponge rubber cushion base which is relatively soft in nature and which is easily damaged.
A strip of flexible sheet material I6 preferably of cloth, leather or the like non-stretchable material is attached to the bottom front edge of the cushion base I2 and extends around the front edge of .the kneeler and is attached to the bottom front. edge thereof. This strip of flexible sheetvmaterial is preferably non-elastic in construction and has one edge Ili molded directlyinto the bottom face of the cushion base I2. The other edge is extended around the front edge ofv the kneeler I2 and is provided with a mucilage I8 for securing this free edge to the bottom edge portion of the kneeler I0 between the points I9 and 20. This permits that portion of the strip I6 which extends around the rounded front edge of the kneeler to be free thereof and to move relative thereto when the base I2 is compressed under the weight of a person kneeling thereon. The strip I6 is provided for securing the front edge of the cushion to the front edge of the kneeler to prevent the same from being pivoted about its rear point of connec- As shown in Fig. 3, the knee 2| of a person kneeling upon the kneeler I is indicated by dot and dash lines. The weight of the person kneeling thereon causes the base l2 to be compressed, stretching the cover in its width. This causes a space 22 to be formed between the adjacent faces of the edge of the kneeler l0 and the strip it. When the compression force is released the resiliency of the cushion base [2 will draw the flexible sheet material l6 back to the position indicated in Fig. 2.
As shown in Fig. 6 the strip forming the cover is adapted to be manufactured in extremely long pieces and to be sold by jobbers in varying lengths cut from the strip and which may easily be attached to the pews by applying moisture to the adhesives l3 and I8.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4 the construction of the kneeler cover is similar to that previously described, except for the provision of an additional means for securing the front edge of the cover to the kneeler. This means comprises a second strip of non-elasticflexible sheet material 23 of cloth, leather or the like material attached to the bottom of the front edge portion of the cushion base l2 and extended rearwards of the kneeler and attached thereto. This second strip of flexible sheet material 23 has one edge portion 23 molded into the bottom face of the cushion base I2 in face contact with the edge portion I6- of the strip It. The other edge portion 23 is extended backwards along the bottom face of the cushion base l2 and is provided on its bottom face with a mucilage 24 for securely attaching the edge portion 23 to the kneeler I0. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the construction of the kneeler cover is similar to that shown in Fig. 2, except that the strip of flexible sheet material I6 is constructed of rubber and is attached to the bottom edge portion of the kneeler l0 under tension. Thus when a person kneels upon the cover and compresses the cushion base I2 the strip of flexible material l6 will not be spaced from the adjacent edge of the kneeler I 0, as
.shown in Fig. 3, but will merely lose some of its tension and assume a slackened position about 1 the kneeler Ill while still remaining in face contact therewith.
This form of the invention also differs from the previous form in that the cork back strip M extends .beyond the bottom face of the cushion base i2 and forms a portion of the back edge of the kneeler ID. This cork back strip I4 is securely attached to the back edge of the kneeler ill by means of a plurality of nails or screws 25 extended therethrough and into the back edge of the kneeler Iii. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
It is to be understood that this device may be used for padding or materials used for any purpose and the flexible sheet [5 may be produced in any thickness, color and shape.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved toall changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I' claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
