PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD C. BLIVEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HERMAN KRO HNSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
REST.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 735,453, dated August 4, 1903. Application filed May 7,1963. $erialNo.155,968. (No model.)
.To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, HOWARD O. BLIVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to head-rests of barbers. or dentists chairs. These commonly have an exterior of plush, which induces a speedy slipping or wadding of the protecting towel or cloth when the occupants head rests thereon. This serious and sometimes daingerous annoyance is one that cannot be overcome by means involving the use of pins, as the material of the chair is too impervious, and such chairs are too valuable to deface by insertion of metallic bodies.
To overcome the above and other deficiencies existing in detachable coverings for such chairs my invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- V Figure 1 shows in side elevation a head-rest embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the detachable spring member.
Like reference letters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In detail A represents a detachable member composed of steel or other springy metal,
which comprises a long slightly-curved body a, with its end portions b curved inwardly toward and nearly parallel to each other. The curved arms I) each terminate in a roll 0..
The towel d or other covering for the headrest B is applied to the head oof the latter in the following manner: The towel is folded approximately midway its length, with the loop or fold e behind the rest, which results in the two layers or thicknesses mnpassing over the top of the head-rest and hanging down in front of the latter. After the towel is arranged as above described the member A is applied by traversing the loop ewith the member A, expanding the arms I), and encircling the rear of the rest with the portion a. When the arms are released, the terminal rolls 0 thereof press inwardly against the sides of the head 0, forcing the inner towel-layer n tightly against the back of the rest B. The frequent exchange of towels is facilitated by the facile detachment of the member A.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a head-rest, of a removable fabric folded between its ends and placed over the upper end of said head-rest, and a claspin g member having its mid portion embracing the fold of said fabric next to the head-rest, and its end portions engaging opposite sides of said rest, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a head-rest, of a removable fabric, double folds engaged over the upper end of said head-rest with the fold at the rear and the overlapped free ends upon the front side of said head-rest, and a spring clamping member interposed between. said folds at the rear with its ends frictionally engaging opposite sides of the head-rest and its mid portion forcibly holding the inner fold in close. contact with the back of the head-rest.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD o. BLIVEN.
