TROUSERS STRETCHER AND SHAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,279, dated February 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY FRANCIS FEATH- ERSTONE, of \Vest New Brighton, Staten Island, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers Stretchers and Shapers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in trousers stretchers and shapers, and has for its object to provide an attachment for such devices whereby the trousers stretched upon the articles will be given a curved line at the seam instead of the unseemly straight line which at present is obtained; or, in other words, the object of the invention is to provide an attachment to trousers stretchers which will insure a proper shaping of the trousers.

The invention consists in the novelconstruction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, illustrating its application to a pair of trousers; Fig. 2 is an edge View of the device applied to a pair of trousers stretchers; Fig. 3 is a section taken practically on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a section through one of the bars of a trousers stretcher, illustrating a slight modification in the fastening device of the attachment.

In carrying out the invention the attachment consists practically of two arms 10 and 11, one arranged at an angle to the other, the angle being preferably a right angle. These arms may be made of any approved material, wood, metal, rubber, celluloid, or the equivalents thereof. Ordinarily, however, wood is used in their construction, and in addition to the two arms a locking device is employed, by means of which the attachment is made to the trousers stretcher, proper, the arms, when connected, constituting what may be termed a trousers shaper. The outer arm 11, which may be termed the cross arm, is preferably given acurved outer edge, and pins 12, or like fastening devices are projected from this cross arm upon one face in such manner that the pins extend diagonally over the outer or cylindrical edge of the arm. These pins are adapted to engage with the trousers, and are arranged upon the radius of a circle, and whatever the fastening device employed in lleu of the pins it is shaped or arranged in the same manner.

The attachment is applicable to any form of trousers stretcher; the trousers stretcher shown in the drawings is that which is commonly sold, and is known as the simplest form of such a stretcher. It comprises two head clamping bars A, connected by set screws A, two foot bars B, carrying. set screws B, and two connecting bars D and D, capable of sliding movement upon each other, and havlnga form of take-up applied thereto.

The attachment of the device is made at the lower connecting bar D, at or near its center, or in such a position that when a pair of trousers is stretched upon the device the attachment will engage with the trousers near and below the knee portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 1.

One method of securing the attachment or device is to place pins 13 in the inner end of the arm 10, which are entered in apertures 1n the outer edge of the lower connecting bar D. This attachment stands parallel with the head and the foot bars of the stretcher, and the teeth or pins 12, are made to face the inner portion of the stretcher so as to be engaged with the trousers, the trousers being secured between the head and the foot bars and properly stretched, and the outer edge of the trousers in which the seam is produced, is made to engage with the pins 12 of the attachment,or with whatever equivalent fastening devices may be employed. This will impart to the trousers below the knee a convexity, and will give to the seam a curve from the bottom to the top, the curve being the ordinary compound curve. The trousers are not fastened closely between the foot bars until the attachment has engaged with them; then the trousers are drawn down and secured.

In Fig.4 I have illustrated a modified form of securing mechanism; that is, a mechanism for attaching the shaping attachment to a trousers stretcher, which device consists of a collar 14, adapted to surround the upright D of the stretcher, the said collar being provided with a spring 15 and a stud 16, which stud enters anaperture in the upright; but any form of clamp, spring, or otherwise, may be employed for securing the shaping attachment to the trousers stretcher, and the shape of the clamp is varied according to the shape of the bar to which the shaper is to be applied.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

1. A trousers stretcher comprising the bar provided at its ends with transverse clamps movable toward and from each other to stretch the trousers longitudinally and a shaper extending transversely from the rear edge of the bar above its lower clamp and provided with a curved or rounded outer edge,substantially as set forth. I

2. A trousers stretcher and shaper comprising a longitudinally adjustable bar having transverse clamps at its ends, and a transverse arm 10 projecting from the bar between its ends and having a head 11 on its outer end; the said head being curved longitudinally on its outer edge, substantially as set forth.

3. A shaping attachment for trousers stretchers comprising the arm 10 having a box loop 14 at its inner end, a catch or fastening on said loop and the head 11 on the outer end of the arm and having a longitudinally curved outer edge provided with pins or teeth, substantially as set forth. r

4. A trousers stretcher comprising the bar having transverse clamps on its opposite ends, a transverse arm having a slide embracingthe bar and provided with a catch or fastening for securing it to the bar at any desired point and a shaper head on the outer end of the arm and having a curved and toothed outer edge, substantially as set forth.
