UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
\VILLIAM J. CRISTMAN, OF HERKIMER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORTO CORNELIUS R. SNELL AND MENNING DEIMEL, OF SAME PLACE.
BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,409, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed April 12, 1889.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. CRISTMAN, of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spring-beds.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar figures of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 shows a top view of my bed with the fabric removed. Fig. 2 shows an edge view. Fig. 3 shows an end view. Fig. 4 shows the bed partially set up. Fig. 5 shows a portion of an end view from left of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows the fabric and cross-bars detached from the side bars.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 are the side bars upon which the fabric is strained.
2 2 are the cross-bars to which the fabric is secured.
3 is the fabric.
4 is the straining-arm or auxiliary side bar secured by bolt 11 at one end firmly to one of the cross-bars, as 2. The other end of the arm is pivoted to the side bar at a point preferably about two-thirds of the length of the side bar from the point where the cross-bar 2 is to be secured to bar 1 by a bolt 5, engaging it in a slotted opening. Gross-bar 2 is provided with a slotted opening 7, through which bolt Lll 8 passes-for the purpose of securing it to the side rail. A set-screw 6, mounted in a post upon the top of the side, rail, is provided, the set-screw being adapted to exert pressure against cross-bar 2 when in proper position toward the end of the rail. The screw 6 exerts pressure on the cross-bar near the fabric,

and in such manner that the tendency to curl and bind is largely overcome. Cross-bar 2 is firmly and rigidly but removably secured to the side rails by bolts 9 and 10.
The purpose, use, and operation of my device are as follows: It is often desirable to ship beds in detached pieces, and in the case of the bed described the rails l and the web and cross-bars, connected as shown in Fig. 3, or rolled up, would be shipped in separate pieces, together with a pair of arms 4. hen it becomes desirable to set the bed up, arm 4is secured to cross-bar 2 by bolt 11 and to the side bar 1 by bolt 5. (There is a brace or arm 4 for each side bar 1.) When this has been done, the bed will be in about the form shown in full lines in Fig. 4, thereby forcing crossbar 2 down to the side rail into the position shown in dotted lines. By this movement 6 5 the fabric is strained the distance between the arc of the smaller and the arc of thelarger circles, as shown. The cross-bar 2 is then secured to side rail 1 by bolt 8, passing through slotted opening 7, and the web is further strained by set-screw 6, the slotted openings at 5 and 7 admitting of this movement.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described bed, having in combination the side rails l 1, the crossbar 2, secured to, and cross-bar 2, detachablysecured to, the top of the rails 1, the pieces 4 4, secured at one'end to the cross-bar 2 and at the other by a bolt engaging in a slot in the piece 4 to the side bar, the straining set-screws 6 on top of the side rails and adapted to exert pressure directly against the cross-bar, and the bolt .or fastening 8 between the cross-bar 2 and side bars, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. CRISTMAN.
