IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. SHERMAN and JEREMIAH G. SHERMAN, of McHenry, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broom-Heads; and we do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of our said invention consists in a novel device for securing and holding the broom-corn or other material used in making a broom or brush in the proper form and position, whereby the broom is readily made, and when worn out readily replaced with new material, so as to form a new broom whenever needed at a trifling expense, being simply the cost of the broom-corn used in making it.

To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use our said invention, we will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the broom as completed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of ouiyinvention; Fig. 3, a similar view taken at right angles with the section shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a side view of one of the keys or pins used in securing the broom-corn in place.

The same letters of reference in thedifi'erent figures indicate the same parts of our invention.

A represents our improved broom head, which consists of a metallic case or cup, made of any suitable sheet metal stamped into the proper shape or cast, as preferred, into which the broom-corn is placed, as shown, and being provided with a socket, D, to receive the handle 0.

Through each side of the case A, opposite each other, respectively, are made the slots,

(marked a and 12,) as shown.

Passing transversely across the hollow head and arranged with respect to the aforesaid slots or openings at b are the bars, (marked 61,) which may be cast with the head A or otherwise secured upon it; and along each side are cast or arranged the projections or ledges, (marked 0,) arranged with respect to the slots 0 as shown.

The broom is arranged within the head as follows: Enough of the broom-corn to fill the space between the sides of the case-or edges, rather-and the cross-bars 61 upon each side, when a suitable number of the keys 1) are driven through the slots 1), being driven in alternately from one side and the other, so as to firmly hold the corn between the ledges c and the bars (Z. Afterward the broom-corn is filled into the middle part ofthe head as full as necessary to make the broom of the proper size,when similar keys are driven in, in the same manner, through the openings to, thus firmly securing and holding the whole broomin the head, sub stantially as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen enough of the wedges or keys 1) have been forced in to eli'ect the purpose desired the ends are cut off which project upon each side, and the broom is completed.

It will be readily seen that by this method of fastening the material into the broom-head the broom-corn is pressed laterally against the edge of the broom 4 head, instead of being clamped by the sides of the broom-head, as in other cases. \Ve claim that this method of fastening enables the use of much lighter metal in the manufacture of the broom-head.

To replace the broom when worn out these keys are driven out and the broom removed, when the new broom may be inserted, as described. A

\Ve claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Fastening the broom-corn or other mate rial into the broom-head by forcing keys or wedges through slots in said head, substantially as herein shown.
