PER 4 Lf @Qd UNITED STATES LEONARD GEORGE BASKETS, OF NEWPORT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL FORCEPS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,012, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD GEORGE HAs- KINS, of Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Reversible Forceps; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
This invention relates to a new and useful improv ement in dental forceps; and consists mainly in reversible jaws, constructed and arranged to operate in combination with the handles, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view of my reversible forceps complete. Fig. 2 represents the jaws detached from the handle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line oo r. Fig. 4 is a section of one ofthe handles, showing the mode of securing the jaw therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the handles; C and D are the jaws. Each jaw has a beak, E, at each end, and they are fitted together by halving, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, having a central hole, f, for the pivotbolt g, by means of which they are fastened to the handles. lb is a plate on the end of each handle, forming, with the end t, a right angle in cross-section. The handles being reversed, the
jaws are inclosed within the quadrangle thus formed, and the four parts are held together by the pivot-bolt g, as seen in Fig. 3. In order to open and close the jaws when they are thus connected with the handles each plate h has a pin, J. lo represents two holes in each of the jaws, which receive the pins J, as seen in Fig. 3. The jaws are operated by Ineans of these pins, whichever pair of beaks may be in use.
By making thev jaws thus detachable and reversible a single pair may be adapted to most dental purposes; but a variety of jaws suited forall the purposes for which dental forceps are used may be ltted and made reversible in a single pair of handles.
I do not limit or confine myself to the precise form or arrangement of the parts described, as they may be varied in many ways without'departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The reversible jaws O and D, in combination with the handles A and B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a forceps with reversible or detachable jaws. the pins J and holes k, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The jaws O and D, with the pivot-hole f therein, halved together, as shown and described, for the purposes set forth.
4. The pivot-bolt g, in combination with thejaws O and D.
5. The plates h, pins J, and holes j, in combination with the handles A and B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
. LEONARD GEO. HASKINS.
