Inventor Y Attorneys LOUIS MARTAIN SARTAIN, OF VIPELI-IAIVI, TENNESSEE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1 913.
Application filed February 13, 1913. Serial No. 748,171.
To all cli/tom, t may concern Be it known that LoUrs VI. SAn'rAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in the county lof Grundy and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Broom, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brooms and more particularly to that type of broom in which the bristles are removably secured thereto.
One object of the present invention is to provide improved means whereby the bristles may be securely held within the broom head and furthermore may be readily and easily detached therefrom when their period of usefulness is past.
A further object is to provide a broom head to which the broom handle is detachably secured, the said handle also forming locking means for the securing of the bristles within the broom head.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inventio-n herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invent-ion is illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved broom. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof taken on the line A-A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved broom with the handle thereof removed. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the broom head.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is a broom handle detachably secured to a broom head 2 and 3 designates bristles detachably secured to the broom head.
The broom head 2 comprises the two boX- like portions 4 and 5 pivot-ally secured as at 6, the box-like portieri 4 being slightly larger than the box-like portion 5 .to which it is connected, which allows the portion 5 to pass within the end walls of the portion 4 and beneath the top thereof, with the result that the broom head forms a complete inclosure for the bristles which are secured therein. The top plates of the box-like members 4 and 5 of the broom head are provided with the apertures 6 and 7 which are adapted to aline when the said members are in a closed position as illustrated in Fig. 2. To the top of the box-like portion 4 and arranged in alinement with the aperture 6 therein is a tube 8 either soldered or formed integral with the top plate and said tube forms a guide and brace for the handle l.
To the inner lower portions of the boX- hlre members 4 and 5 are secured the shelves 9 the outwardly projecting portions of which are provided with the serrated edges 10, the said edge serrations adapted to engage and bite into the broom bristles to obtain a positive and substantial hold thereon. The said shelves are securely held to the broom head members by rivets or other suitable means. They are positioned above the pivotal connection 6 of the two broom head members. The handle 1 of the broom which is preferably formed of wood is provided with an annular depression or notch 11 extending therearound and which notch is adapted to be engaged by the top plate of the lower box-like member 5. The two apertures 6 and 7 of the box-like members are rst forced into alinement by the beveled end 12 of the broom handle 1.
When the bristles 3 have become so worn as to be useless the box-like members 4 and 5 are sprung together with the result that the top plate of the member 5 is sprung out of engagement with the annular notch 11 of the broom handle and the latter is then withdrawn. The two members 4 and 5 may then be rotated about the pivotal connection 6 with the result that the shelves 9 which constitute the gripping or holding means for the broom bristles are drawn apart and out of engagement with the broom bristles which are thereby detached and may be withdrawn from the broom head. In order to position a new set of bristles within the broom head, the box-like members 4 and 5 are rotated to a maximum open position. The bristles may then be inserted within the lower open end of the boxing and beyond the gripping shelves 9. The box-like members 4 and 5 are now brought together and the broom handle passed downwardly through t-he cylindrical tube 8 through the aperture 6 and forcing the aperture 7 into alinement therewith by reason ot the beveled end of the said handle it being understood that it requires some little pressure to bring the said apertures into alinementby reason ot the shelves 9 with the serrated edges 10 thereof biting into and gripping the sides of the broom bristles as more clearly illustrated in F ig. 2. 'Ihe broom handle l is forced downwardly until the notch; l1 thereof comes in front ot' the sides of the aperture 7 which immediately snaps thereinto with the result that the handle 1 is securely locked to the broom headas are also the broom bristles. The broom as just describedalthough simple in construction and: cheap to manufacture will be found to be etlicient and practical in` service and' tuiT- thermore one in which the broom bristles may be easily placed or removed; Furthermore,l it isl to be noted that there are no threaded connections. used in the present broom which eliminates all likelihood of the latter becoming useless from a stripping thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The combination in a broom head of a clamp comprising oppositely disposed plates provided with side and top flanges, the said flanges interlapping and pivotal means securing the side flanges together, the top flanges provided with apertures extending therethrough, a tube projecting upwardly from the uppermost top iiange and surrounding t-he aperture therein, and a handle provided with a wedge-shaped end adapted to extend through the saidtube and; apertures to bring said top iiange aperturesl in alinement to thereby torce th-e said plates together to engage material which may be disposed therebetween, and said handle provided witlr a notch engageable by one of thev top anges. to thereby holdv the said' handle rigidly in place.
In testimony that I claim the forego-ing as my own, I have hereto afliiXed my signature in thel presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS MARTAIN SARTAIN.
