CURRY-COMB.

Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort \Vortlnin the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Curry- Combs; andIdohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to that class of curry-combs provided with detachable and reversible handles, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means whereby the handle can be readily detached from the comb and replaced in a reverse position, or removed for the purpose of economizingspace in packing for transportation.

Heretofore it has been common in the above class of curry-combs to provide the bracket of the comb with a hole, and the handle with a screw-threaded shanlgwhich was rigidly connected thereto,andafterbeinginsertedthrough the hole in the bracket held therein by a jamnut engaging with the screw-threaded extremity of the shank or by the employment of a setscrew. In order to detach the handle from the comb it was necessary to remove the nut or loosen the set-screw, and frequently these fastening devices would be lost or mislaid. It has been also common to connect the handles to the blades of garden implementssuch as hoes or rakesso that different kinds of implements could be used with the same handle, this being attained by providing the blade with an open slot, a headed screw-bolt passed through the slot and engaging with a screwthreaded socket in the handle, and a headed sleeve encircling the bolt and end of the handle, the blade being clamped between the two heads of the bolt and sleeve, respectively. This construction could not be used with effect as a means for detachably connecting the handles to curry-combs, as it would be both complicated and expensive, as it is the object of my invention to provide as simple means as possible for attaining this end, whereby the operation of detaching and replacing of the handle is accomplished by simply turning the handle in the proper direction without the necessity of removing a jam-nut or loosening a set-screw, or providing a screw-threaded socket in the handle, and a headed sleeve to encircle the end of the handle, as in the constructions above referred to.

The invention thereforeconsists, in connection with an open slotted bracket upon the back of a curry-comb, of a rod extending entirely through the handle and of greater-length than said handle,aud provided at one end with fiat sides and a head, and at the opposite end with screw-threads and a nut, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the curry-comb, of any of the usual forms, provided with a bracket, B, having the open slot a. The handle 0 is provided with a rod, D, having at one end a head, b, and at its opposite end screw-threaded, as shown at c. A nut, d, engages with the screw-threaded end of the rod D, and immediately back of the head b the rod is formed with flat sides 6 to prevent it from turning with the handle 0 when seated in the open slot at of the bracket.

Taking the construction shown in Fig. 1, wherein the nut 11 servesas the clamping-head, by turning the handle 0 in the proper direction the rod D will turn with it, caused by the frictional contact of the head b with the end of the handle, and by the frictional contact of the face of the nut with the bracketB the nut will remain stationary. As the handle is turned the end of the rod will be unscrewed from the nut sufficiently to allow the rod to be disengaged with the slot in the bracket and the handle removed, and by turning the handle in the opposite direction the nut is brought tightly against the bracket sufficiently to firmly hold the handle to the comb, as shown, or in a reverse position, as found desirable.

Fig.2 shows a reversal of the rod, the head I) forming the means of clamping the handle to the bracket instead of the nut d, as in Fig. 1, the nut by frictional contact with the end of the handle turning with it, and the rod remaining stationary by virtue of the flat-sided end of the rod fitting in the slot in the bracket.

always essential to pull the handle toward you after the rod hasbeen placed in the slot of the bracket, thereby bringing the head of the rod against the bracket or the nut, as the case may be, to hold the rod or nut stationary, or, asin Fig. 2, to bring the end of the handle against the face of the nut, so as to turn with thehandle by frictional contact therewith. A very simple means is therefore provided by which the handle can be quickly and easily detached from the comb and replaced to extend over the back thereof or from the side, or in packing altogether detached, as found necessary.

Unlike the constructions hereinbefore re ferred to, the rod passes entirely through the handle,and is of such length as to project beyond the end of the handle. The rod passes loosely through the handle and does not engage with any screw-threads therein, and can be reversed in the handle so either end of the rod can be engaged with the slot in the bracket, as found preferable.

The nut, if preferred, may be formed with a concave inner face, as shown inFig. 2, to more firmly bite the end of the handle, so that the nut by frictional contact therewith will be turned with the handle.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 The combination,with a curry-comb provided with a bracket having an open slot, of a handle and a rod loosely passing through it, and of greaterlength than thehandle,and provided at one end with a head and flat sides on the rod, and at its opposite end provided with screw-threads and a nut, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
