Description

HORACE THOMPSON, OF CONCORD, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
BROOVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,290, dated September 6, 1898. Application tiled March '7, 1898. Serial No. 672,813. V(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing atAConcord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratan or Fiber Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object novel improvements in the construction of ratan or ber brooms; and the invention will be fully set forth in the following specication and claim and clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same, of which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved broom having a portion of its handle broken E, Fig. 2 being a cross-section of the same on the plane Fig. l.
Similar reference -letters denote corresponding parts in both views.
A is the handle, which is fitted to a perforation in thecenter of the head-block B.
C is a form or block over which the ratan or ber D is placed,as shown, and this block is securely clamped -to the head-block B by The bolts E, provided with threaded nuts e. under part of the block B may be grooved or made concave, as at b, to conform somewhat to the ber D, which is clamped between the blocks B C, and in order to rmly bind the ber down upon the sides of the latter I provide a binder made of a single wire F, and this is secured rmly to the block C by staples c, driven at frequent intervals through the ber D and into the said block C, as shown in Fig. l; As a means of preventing the ber at either end of this block C from working oif I drive a wide staple Gr into the ends of the p blocks B C. i
In brooms of the character described the handles are apt to give much annoyance by Working out of their socket or breaking off, and to remedy this difficulty I pass a wire I-I through the block C, as seen best in Fig. 2, bringing its ends up on either side of the blocks B C andthe handle A, the extreme ends of said wire I-I being bent at an angle, as at h, and driven into the Vhandle A, the wire being secured by staples I, driven into the said handle and the block B, the whole construction being' simple, strong, and very economical. y.
Having described myimprovements, what I claim is- A ber broom provided with a clamp composed of a head-block and a form'over which the ber is placed, and bolts adapted to draw the form closely to the head-block, a handle entering thej latter, a single Wire passing around the lower portion of said form serving as a binder for the ber,`staples for securing the binder to said form, and a brace for said handle composed of a wire passing through the form below said binder and having its ends bent at an angle and driven into said handle, and secured to the handle and head-block by staples.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE THOMPSON.
