RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed March 26, 1915. Serial No. 17,287.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMEs R. HOKE, QUINTON J. HoKE, and PHILIP MICHAELS, citizens of the United States, residing at Hendersonville, in the county of Henderson, State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Razor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to razors and more particularly to means whereby the razor blade can be detachably connected to the handle of the razor so that, when it is desired to sterilize the blade, it can be removed from the handle so that the operation of sterilizing will not injure the handle.
A further object is to provide means of this character which can either be connected to the razor blade so as to form a part thereof, or can be made separate from the blade and removable from the blade as well as from the handle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a razor having the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is.
a section on line A-B Fig. 1, said section being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stem of the blade and the clips carried thereby. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through a slightly modified form of attachment. Fig. 5 is a section on line CD Fig. 4, the stem of the blade being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a supplemental handle which may be used in connection with the blade.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the stem of a blade 2, which stem can be of the usual form. EX- tending through this stem is a rivet 3 the ends of which are secured within opposed plates 4 having inturned side flanges 5. The flanges on each plate converge toward one end and thus cooperate to form a clip. It will be seen that the ends of the rivet 3 are flush with the outer faces of the plates 4.
The handle 5 may be of the usual or any preferred form and the split end of the handle is adapted to engage the two clips, one half of the handle wedging securely between the flanges 5 on one plate 4, while the other half of the handle wedges between the flanges 5 on the other plate. As the stem 1 1s pivotally mounted on the rivet 3, it will be apparent that when the clips are in engagement with the handle, the blade 2 can be moved into or out of the handle in the usual manner and the razor can be used as ordinarily.
When it is desired to sterilize the razor, the clips which frictionally engage the handle can be withdrawn therefrom so that the handle can be laid aside while the blade 2 and its stem 1 together with the clips are placed in the sterilizers. If preferred, a supplemental handle such as shown in Fig. 6 can be used, this handle being relatively short and having a slot 6 extending thereinto from one end, the opposed portions of the slotted end of the handle being adapted to wedge within the two clips made up of plates 4 and flange 5.
Instead of utilizing clips to which the stem of the razor blade is positively connected, a modified structure such as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 can be used. This structure includes a central tapered sleeve 7 designed to receive and bind tightly upon the stem 1 of the blade. Short rivets 8 are secured in the sides of the sleeve 7 and are pivotally engaged by clips 9 similar to the clips hereinbefore described. These clips 9 are adapted to receive the side portions of the handle as before pointed out, and as the sleeve 7 is pivotally connected by the rivets 8 to the clips, it will be seen that when the clips are in engagement with the handle and the stem 1 is in engagement with the sleeve 7, the razor can be swung into or out of the handle as ordinarily. By withdrawing the clips from the handle and by removing the sleeve 7 from stem 1, the blade 2 and its stem can be placed in the sterilizer independently of the clips and of the handle. Furthermore with this modified structure it becomes unnecessary to perforate the stem 1.
As shown in Fig. 5 the sleeve 7 can be formed with a tongue 19 having a small lip 11 designed to engage the roughened back of the razor stem or shank 1, thus to prevent the sleeve fromslipping ofl of the shank.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a razor handle havinga split end portion, of a razor blade having a stem extending therefrom, and clips pivotally mounted at opposite sides of the stem and extending transversely of and embracing the sides of the splitportion of the handle.
' 2. The combination with a handle having a split portion, of a razor blade having a stem, opposed clips tapered longitudinally and pivotally mounted at the sides of the razor stem, said clips being constantly connected, each clip being adapted to extend transversely of and to embrace one side of the splitportion of the handle.
3. The combination with a handle having a split portion,' of opposed tapered clips detachably and frictionally engaging 0pposed parts of the split portion of the handle, a blade having a stem, and a sleeve detachably engaging the stem and pivotally mounted between the clips.
d Copies of this patent may be obtained for 4. The combination with a blade having a stem, a sleeve adapted to frictionally engaging the stem, and clips pivotally connected to opposite sides of the sleeve, of a handle having a split end forming spaced portions adapted to be wedged within the respective clips.
5. The combination with handle engaging clips, of a sleeve pivotally mounted therebetween for receiving the stem of a razor blade, and a resilient tongue upon said sleeve.
6. The combination with handle engaging clips, of a sleeve pivotally mounted therebetween for receiving the stem of a razor blade, and a resilient tongue upon said sleeve, said tongue having a stem engaging lip.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aflixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
