HORACE MELLUISI-I AND ALFRED MONTREUIL, or SHAWENEGAN FALLS, QUEBEC,
' CANADA.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HORACE MELLUISH and ALFRED MONTREUIL, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Shawenegan Falls, in the Province'of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new ferred and practical embodiments being shown in the accompanying drawing, in which V Figure 1 is a plan view of a preferred embodiment of the invention. Fig.2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a bolt casing used in connection with the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing inwhich like reference characters designate similar parts, 5
, indicates the handle of the ax to which is secured the head 6 having the handle receiving opening 7 therein, said head being tapered and having a bifurcation formed in its tapered end 8, the opening formed by said bifurcation communicating wit-l1 the handle receiving opening 7. A bit 9 of the ordinary well known construction has a shank 10 adapted to fit into the bifurcated end of the head 7. On each side of the shank 10, the same is provided with a packing strip 11 made of felt or any other suitable material which is adapted to engage the inner walls of the bifurcation whereby a binding action will take place. The strips 11 extend beyond the inner end of the shank 10 as indicated at 12 so that there will also be a binding action between said strips and the end of the handle 5 which is inserted into the opening 7 of the head. In the form illustrated in Fig. 1, the head 6 in the tapered end thereof is provided with alined openings 13 having their walls beveled as indicated at 14, said openings being Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to. register with similar openings 15 formed in the shank 10 of the bit 9. hen securing the bit to the head, the bolt casing 16 is first inserted into the openings. Said casing has its outer walls inclined so as to readily engage the beveled walls of the openings whereby said casing may be securely seated therein. The casing is also provided with a square opening 17 adapted to receive the square portion 18 of the shank of the bolt 19. The outer end of the opening 17 formed in the casing 16 is flared as indicated at 19 in order that a nut 20 having its edge beveled may be threaded upon the threaded portion 20 of the bolt and be countersunk in the flared end of said casing. The casing is split longitudinally thereof as indicated at 21 whereby it may be forced into binding engagement with-the walls of the openings 13 and 15 upon the inward movement of the nut 20 thus securely retaining the bit in engagement with the head.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawing, the tapered end 8 of the head 6 is provided with alined openings 22 having their walls beveled as indicated at 28, said openings being adapted to register with an opening 24: formed in the shank 10 of the bit 9. WVhen in registering relation, the openings are adapted to receive a bolt 25 having a head 26 which is adapted to be countersunk in one of the openings when said bolt is in position. The bolt is also provided with a threaded portion 27 which is adapted to receive a nut 28 having its edge beveled as indicated at 29 so that the same will countersink in the adjacent opening formed in the head when said nut is threaded upon the threaded portion of the bolt thus securely retaining the bit in engagement with the head.
From the foregoing description taken in connect-ion with the drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing an improved ax which is simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to. a minimum and which is durable and effective.
Vhat is claimed is .1. A device of the class described comprising a head having a bifurcation in one end thereof, a bit having a shank adapted to be inserted in said bifurcated end, fpacking strips carried by said shank and engaging the walls of said bifurcation, said strips being adapted to extend beyond the inner end of said shank, a handle adapted to be inserted into said head and engage the eX- tended portions of said strips, and means engaging said head and the shank of said bit for retaining the latter in engagement with the said head.
2. A device of the class described comprising a head having a bifurcated end, a bit having a shank adapted to fit in said hifurcated end said head and shank bein I a I u u b provided wlth alined openlngs, the openings in said head having their walls beveled, a split casing adapted to fit in said openings, a bolt engaging said casing, and means engaging said bolt for bindin said casing against the walls of said openings.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
