TQS. BROWN.
COMBINED SALIVA HECTOR AND TONGUE FENDER.

VVI'TNESSES: INVENIOR .THOMAS s. BROWN, or OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
I coMBInED SALIVAL-EJEQTOR eta-evenness.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
Application filed November 10, 1915. Serial No. 60,670.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Saliva-Ejectors and Tongue-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dental instrument.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical dental instrument which, although primarily serving as a saliva ejecting tube, is also adapted to act as a tongue fender, and as a reflector, so positioned as to aid the operator in his work.
Another object is to so arrange the saliva discharge openings and connected passage that the tissues of the mouth will be prevented from drawing into or closing the passages.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the instrument, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, A indicates a seamless ejector tube, of suitable size, shape and material, the lower end of which is adapted to be connected with a rubber discharge tube in the usual manner.
.The upper end of the tube is preferably U-shaped, as shown at 2, and is then bent around in a loop, as at 3, and the free end able openings 5, positioned on each side of the reflecting plate and adjacent to the surface of same. This position of the ejecting openings positively prevents the tissues of the mouth from being drawn in and stopping the passage, thus insuring a free discharge at all times.
In practice, with the tube connected to a suitable suction apparatus not here shown, it is only necessary to place the U end, carrying the guard and deflector, in the mouth of the patient. It may then be turned to assume the most effective position as a guard and to permit the use of the reflector and, furthermore, to remove the saliva as the saliva would otherwise accumulate and flood the mouth.
The device is simple and practical and being constructed as shown may be readily cleaned or sterilized before and after use.
The loop-like guard extension and reflector support may be constructed of a solid piece of rather heavy wire, as shown at 8 in Fig. 1, or may be formed by extending the tube.
The materials and finish of the device may otherwise be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined saliva ejector, tongue fender and reflector comprising an ejector tube, having a U-shaped perforated bend formed at its upper end, and a vertically disposed reflecting plate secured to the U-bend of the tube.
2. The combination with an ejector tube having a U-shaped bend formed at its upper end, of a vertically positioned guard frame carried by the U-bend and a vertically positioned reflector secured in the guard frame, said U-bend having ejector openings formed near the lower end, one on each side of the reflector. I
' 3. A dental instrument comprising a tube having a perforated U-bend at its upper end, and a vertically positioned tongue guard extension formedv integral with the U-bend.
4. A dental instrument comprising a tube, m hand in the presence of two subscribing having a perforated U-bend at its upper end, Witnesses. a vertically arranged circular shaped tongue guard extensionformed integral with the T BROWN 5 U-bend, and a refiector secured interiorly Witnesses} of the guard. W. (humans,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set CHRIs. B. Fox.
